<text>This 1929 Collegian article focuses on the origin of Richmond College, and the various presidents that were responsible for the foundation of the school. Mentioned is Edward Baptist who was the founder of the Virginia Baptist Seminary that eventually became Richmond College. In the days of the Baptist college, men would be trained in medicine, law, or preaching. The article discusses how Dr. Robert Ryland was the first president of the college from 1832 to 1861. Also discussed, is J. L. Shuck who was described as the first American Baptist missionary to China, as he went in the 1830s before the Southern Baptist Convention had been formed. Mr. Shuck brought back Young Seen Chang, who was to attend the Virginia Baptist Seminary. Chang was a Chinese student and said to be one of the first Chinese students to come to the country.</text>

<text>This 1907 Messenger essay details the University's history as it is described as a matter of great interest to students and the community. Among the history of the foundation of the college, there is discussion of a "colored" server named Tom who Mr. Ryland mentioned often. Tom "the cupbearer" was said to be extremely speedy at serving and clearing the dishes, and "enjoyed keenly the honors of the position, and regarded himself as one of the early graduates." There is also discussion of the Civil War, in regards to how Richmond College needed to shut down as many of its students went off to fight in the war, and the institution itself was used as a hospital.</text>
