This effort to recruit some 40 minorities was spearheaded by Dr. Tinina Cade, the Director of Minority Affairs at the University of Richmond. She would go into the cIty of Richmond to find exceptional black students. She also believed that the best way to recruit minorities was to give the existing ones on campus a good experience. That way they will spread the word on how great the campus is for minorities. The article also presents Minority Awareness Weekend that is planned by the Minority Student Union.</text>

Nickerson focused on the identity of black people in communities, specifically on why white people did not understand the identity crisis of black people. Nickerson referenced black people feeling ashamed of the color of their skin because they have only had negative experiences with social conflicts regarding their skin color. Nickerson also stressed that the emphasis black communities have on "Black Power" is not a threat to the white community but a cry for racial awareness, and stated he did not agree with the "extremism" of Rap Brown and Stokley Carmichael, and that only 5% of the 22 million black people in the United States did. Nickerson also visited some religion courses, and the lecture was held at the Westhampton College sophomore class coffee house.</text>

The petition in question was created and signed by students in response to the denial of a black guest speaker's entrance into the university's dining hall, preventing him from eating with students of the university. Though Boatwright claimed he had no knowledge of the incident nor the following emotional reaction of the student body, he went on to admit his belief that the dining hall was not the appropriate place for such instances of integration to take place. Such action, according to Boatwright, was against the historical culture of the school and might force a part of the student body to feel uncomfortable in the public space of the institution. Boatwright concluded that students should only attempt to invite black individuals to eat with them in private spaces, as it is only there that they could be sure everyone involved in the event is involved voluntarily.</text>

<text>This reports on guest lecturer for the Stafford Lecture Series Dr. Janet Wilson James, who is an associate professor of history at Boston College. She talks about how the roots of the women's liberation movement "extend back to the end of the 19th century." She refers to two women in particular: Jane Adams, the founder of the Chicago settlement house Hull House, and Richmond Women's Liberation "forerunner" Mary Cook Munford. She refers how Adams attempted to create a world for women outside the Victorian standard of staying at home, and how she founded a settlement house geared towards women. She also talks about how Munford fought for equal rights in race and sex, and also fought for equality in education for women.</text>

<text>This article, published in the <em>Collegian</em> in 1969, covered the University of Richmond's Religious Emphasis Week. The theme was "Honest Religion for the Secular Man." The series goal was not just to follow traditional methods of religious studies and worship, but to also address contemporary problems which students may have faced. Among various speakers for the event was Dr. Samuel D. Proctor, president of the Institute for Services to Education, whose goal was to promote equal opportunity for black people in higher education. Dr. Proctor opened the lecture series with a talk on the theology of social change and student activism. There was also a panel discussion entitled "Caught in the Draft," which included speakers Bill Grogran and Robert L. Williams. Williams was being tried for draft evasion. There would also be a secular liturgy worship service, a documentary play by Martin B. Duberman entitled <em>In White American,</em>, and a film screening of <em>Fail-Safe.</em> Eric Charles Rust, Mrs. Robert S. Denny, Alton Y. Buzbee, Mrs. Lloyd H. Neil were other featured speakers.</text>

The purpose of this letter was to convey to President Modlin the top choices for their class's commencement speaker. The top choice was a Republican politician, Everett Dirksen, who helped write the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and was an adamant supporter of the Vietnam War. The second choice was Ted Kennedy, a liberal senator known for championing economic and social justice. The majority of those on the list were in politics. There weren't any women on the list. However, two black men, Roy Wilkins and Whitney Young were in the third ranked group of potential speakers.</text>

Despite the fact that the talk had the largest attendance of the year, the newspaper did not cover the talk. Davis begins her opinion piece highlighting the "backlash" that many feminists get due to the media stereotypes that are placed upon then as "bra-burning, family-hating, lesbians." Davis expresses her disappoint in newspaper for not covering Faludi's discussion, and points out that this adds to the backlash, as students are not able to learn about what feminism truly stands for.</text>

<text>This <em>Collegian</em> article summarizes the main points of Dick Gregory's lecture on campus in 1970. Dick Gregory was a black comedian, author, actor, activist, and civil rights leader. His speech was attended by a crowd of about 800, mainly consisting of students. Gregory states that the duty of young people is to "get blamed for everything" as they are the "new American nigger" and "Indian," however, he asserts that the young people are key to solving "this country's problems." Gregory goes on to elaborate that minorities are scapegoats that are blamed for all of the country's problems. He points out racism in the United States as "beautiful people" such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X are being wiped out while others are ignored by the police. He states that this racism has trickled down to the black youth. He gives an example of a five-year-old black boy who, when asked to draw himself, draws a picture of an animal&mdash;Gregory views this is a result of black people being stereotyped as wrongdoers while those in policy-making positions are white. Gregory argues that black people in America are "reacting to your racism." After Dick Gregory's speech, many alumni were irate and sent letters to President Modlin articulating their concerns that he was allowed to speak on campus. Some alumni even ceased their donations, but President Modlin affirmed the principle of free speech as essential to the University. In 1973, Dick Gregory returned to campus to speak in another lecture series.</text>

<text>Dr. J. Ollie Edmunds, a leader in higher education, gave the commencement address, "Checks and Balances" for the Class of 1970. He began his speech by claiming that in the past year and a half, there had been some attacks on the United States Constitution. He compared the democracy of the United States to those of Athens, East Berlin, and Madrid. However, he explained that Athens had transitioned to being a military state. Furthermore, someone Dr. Edmunds met at the University of Athens explained that this happened because college students began complaining and protesting, creating chaos. Dr. Edmunds recounted his visit to East Berlin and asked his guide if Humboldt University ever had student protests, and the guide answered, "You mean like Kent State! No. Soldiers never come on this campus and shoot down students." On May 4, 1970, students at Kent State University were protesting the Vietnam War and the Ohio National Guard killed four students and injured nine students in an effort to suppress this resistance. Having discussed communism in certain European states, he began to close his speech by repeating a question that a Swiss banker asked him, "Will America survive?" and Edmunds went on to ask, "Can democracy still work?" He believed that the violence and riots perpetrated by both right and left extremists would result in an even more repressive government. He also called the graduates to form a "Young People's Lobby" as a productive means for community engagement because every other group including, "the female of our species-God bless them- have their lobby." He spoke disparagingly about the protests occurring around the nation in response to the Vietnam War by referring to them as "silly."</text>
