Dinh was born in the Imperial City of Hie, Vietnam, and during World War II he fought as a guerilla soldier with the Viet Minh Liberation Army. David B. Nickerson, a visiting lecturer of the Religious Activities Council and director of the Southern Field Service Escru. Nickerson focused on the identity of black people in communities, specifically on why white people did not understand the identity crisis of black people. Nickerson referenced black people feeling ashamed of the color of their skin because they have only had negative experiences with social conflicts regarding their skin color. Nickerson also stressed that the emphasis black communities have on "Black Power" is not a threat to the white community but a cry for racial awareness, and stated he did not agree with the "extremism" of Rap Brown and Stokley Carmichael, and that only 5% of the 22 million black people in the United States did. The petition in question was created and signed by students in response to the denial of a black guest speaker's entrance into the university's dining hall, preventing him from eating with students of the university. Though Boatwright claimed he had no knowledge of the incident nor the following emotional reaction of the student body, he went on to admit his belief that the dining hall was not the appropriate place for such instances of integration to take place. Such action, according to Boatwright, was against the historical culture of the school and might force a part of the student body to feel uncomfortable in the public space of the institution. Dick Gregory was a black comedian, author, actor, activist, and civil rights leader. His speech was attended by a crowd of about 800, mainly consisting of students. Gregory states that the duty of young people is to "get blamed for everything" as they are the "new American nigger" and "Indian," however, he asserts that the young people are key to solving "this country's problems." Gregory goes on to elaborate that minorities are scapegoats that are blamed for all of the country's problems. He points out racism in the United States as "beautiful people" such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X are being wiped out while others are ignored by the police. He states that this racism has trickled down to the black youth. He gives an example of a five-year-old black boy who, when asked to draw himself, draws a picture of an animal—Gregory views this is a result of black people being stereotyped as wrongdoers while those in policy-making positions are white. Gregory argues that black people in America are "reacting to your racism." After Dick Gregory's speech, many alumni were irate and sent letters to President Modlin articulating their concerns that he was allowed to speak on campus. Some alumni even ceased their donations, but President Modlin affirmed the principle of free speech as essential to the University. In 1973, Dick Gregory returned to campus to speak in another lecture series. Ollie Edmunds, a leader in higher education, gave the commencement address, "Checks and Balances" for the Class of 1970. He began his speech by claiming that in the past year and a half, there had been some attacks on the United States Constitution. He compared the democracy of the United States to those of Athens, East Berlin, and Madrid. However, he explained that Athens had transitioned to being a military state. Furthermore, someone Dr. Edmunds met at the University of Athens explained that this happened because college students began complaining and protesting, creating chaos. Dr. Edmunds recounted his visit to East Berlin and asked his guide if Humboldt University ever had student protests, and the guide answered, "You mean like Kent State! No. Soldiers never come on this campus and shoot down students." On May 4, 1970, students at Kent State University were protesting the Vietnam War and the Ohio National Guard killed four students and injured nine students in an effort to suppress this resistance. Having discussed communism in certain European states, he began to close his speech by repeating a question that a Swiss banker asked him, "Will America survive?" and Edmunds went on to ask, "Can democracy still work?" He believed that the violence and riots perpetrated by both right and left extremists would result in an even more repressive government. He also called the graduates to form a "Young People's Lobby" as a productive means for community engagement because every other group including, "the female of our species-God bless them- have their lobby."
