Description An account of the resource This 1972 Collegian article details a lecture given by William Taylor, the personal assistant for the firm of I.E DuPont. DuPont offers jobs to high school graduates who pass their pre-employment exam, and those who fail they attempt to seek out, educate them, and give them a re-test. This project was started in response to a need for programs that would give young black men jobs, and is called the Employment Opportunity Training Program (EOTP). The students who fail are taught in a six week program, that includes lessons in reading, arithmetic, spelling and mechanical understanding. All students who take the retest then pass once having gone through the program. DuPont gives three reasons for such success, he first of, can "speak their language" as a fellow black man, the students also receive money for their continued effort in the program, and finally they are given the promise of a career. Jim Winders, the writer of this article, explains the importance of having controversial speakers on campus. Winders explains that because we are an institution that promotes good scholarship, there should be no censorship. However, Winders also explains the importance of allowing the other side to speak as he brings up the fact that "St. Andrews College in North Carolina was not afraid to allow a local Klan official to spew his poison on their campus." Dinh was born in the Imperial City of Hie, Vietnam, and during World War II he fought as a guerilla soldier with the Viet Minh Liberation Army. He later left in order to devote his full time to becoming a journalist, and is especially interested in American culture and the student movement. Mrs. Dianne Kennedy Pike, wife of the late Dr. James A. Pike, and associate professor of religion at Wesley University, Dr. John David Maguire, will be speaking. Mrs. Pike is described as the director of the New Focus Foundation, which was started by her late husband. The foundation is attempting to understand the communication of religious ideals outside the institutional structure of the church. Description An account of the resource This Collegian article summarizes a talk by Ishmail Conway during Black History Month about the misunderstanding of Black fraternities and sororities. Conway traces the history of Black Greek organizations to the early 20th century, and stresses the need for more research on and awareness about the history of these organizations.
