<text>This report from the Panel on the Composition of the Student Body includes a summary of opinions and recommendations from the annual departmental reports. Regarding recruitment, faculty believed that the University needed to increase the budget for recruiting and make a more concerted effort to get students from outside of Virginia. The University should also seek to admit black students through scholarships, foreign students, and other ethnic and socioeconomic minorities. There should be an increase in scholarships, as well as an increase in admission standards. The students would benefit from more dormitory space. There was a point of convergence regarding gaining a more geographically diverse student body. For example, students would benefit from interacting with students different from them and the image of the University could start to shift towards being more cosmopolitan. However, on the other hand, some felt an obligation to serving the Virginian community. Finally, the writers of this report concluded by offering some additional questions like how much the University has changed in the past few years and if it was up to the University to mold students into citizens in accordance with the University's own values.</text>

<text>This is the Annual Report on Westhampton College from the Director of Admissions and Placement, Mary-Allen Anderson, for the 1970-1971 academic year. Anderson began the report by explaining Westhampton College's recruiting efforts from the fall which included visiting thirty-two "Traditional College Day Programs of selected Virginia High Schools" (and two Maryland high schools). However, there was a decline in attendance to these admissions events by students and their parents compared to previous years. Anderson and the other admissions officers believed that interest would rise again once "the racially integrated school population becomes more stabilized." There had been an increase of out-of-state visitors, however many of the people interested in the University wanted to make sure it didn't have a "girls school atmosphere" because many had the desire to mix with men both socially and educationally. Westhampton College students had pointed out their desire to have better racial and socioeconomic diversity, so a dozen Westhampton College students took it upon themselves to return to their high schools to recruit black students. Some students even asked if they could travel with admissions officers. Anderson was "sympathetic" to their efforts but didn't want it to "jeopardize their own academic programs." The students even organized a "Black Day" on April 27, 1971, with the intentions of having eighty black high school students visit campus for the day. <p>Westhampton College accepted 1,884 students and 121 accepted their offer. Among that 121 were a black applicant and a Greek applicant who requested additional time to accept the offer to sort out their finances. Employment opportunities were less than sufficient that year as many students were forced to settle for part-time work. She ended the report by expressing her gratitude for her and her co-workers' time working for the Westhampton College Office of Admissions. She did so because faculty had voted to combine the admissions offices of Westhampton and Richmond College into one overarching department. That year, they enrolled 33 out-of-state and 88 Virginia women in the freshman class. Nine black women applied, three were offered admission, and one accepted the offer. The majority of applicants were Baptist. 7 Jewish women applied, however, only 2 were accepted and enrolled. SAT scores and school rank numbers were also included.</p></text>

<text>This is the Annual Report for Richmond College for the 1968-1969 school year, the first year the University enrolled black residential students. They had 1,344 students enrolled, which was a slight decline from the year before where they had 1,363 students. The Admissions Office accounted for this decline by pointing to the "smaller pool of prospective entering students," the lack of suitable housing because of temporary barracks, and the lack of financial aid. The housing issue was supposed to be remedied the following year with the construction of Moore Hall. There would also be increased financial aid to offer the next year. By the end of the year, they only had 1,287 still enrolled because of student dropouts, graduation, or transferring to the School of Business. 54 percent of students came from Virginia, outside of Richmond. The overwhelming majority of students majored in History and Political Science. The average GPA was a 2.292 on a 4.0 scale. Richmond College saw a 25 percent decline in fraternity membership. "Whether this was a transitory local condition or a symptom of a deeper problem cannot be evaluated at this time." The number of interviews seniors received had increased, and the average salary for those placed with jobs was 700 dollars a month.</text>

<text>This article summarizes the history of "Old Columbia" (then called the Columbia building), which was the first building established as a part of the University of Richmond. The building was made for the Virginia Baptist Seminary as a space to move from Spring Farm in rural Henrico County to a community closer to Richmond City. The Columbia building served a multipurpose use: it housed students, the dining hall, the chapel, the President's house, several of the professors (after the Seminary had converted to Richmond College), and served as a Confederate hospital during the Civil War. The first president of Richmond College, Robert Ryland, pastor of the First African Church, used the Old Columbia building for his congregation's weddings. The article briefly mentions life from the perspective of the Seminary alums: "scantily furnished" rooms, an "abundant" amount of limited food choices, and torn clothing.</text>

The article described Freeman's work as a writer, academic, and educator as well as his connection to the University of Richmond. Freeman was an alumnus and former member of the administration. The article told of his childhood in Lynchburg, VA and the "strict upbringing he received from his father, a confederate soldier." The article argued that Freeman's childhood led to his conservative values and traditional outlooks, including his disapproval of women enrolling in Richmond College classes. The article went on to describe Freeman's involvement in <em>The Messenger, The Richmond News Leader</em>, and his work as a radio broadcaster. The article concluded with a list of book publications and the awards they have received.</text>

<text>This article -- published on October 23, 1980, in <em>The Collegian</em> -- describes the discontent that black students had toward the way students, faculty, and even parents treated them at the University of Richmond. Students who were interviewed described moments in which they were excluded from the dominant culture on campus, including moments where some were mistaken as staff. In addition, the interviewees described the cultural differences on campus, namely that most of the student population came from private schools, and thus had no previous interactions with black people. The article interviews several black students, none of whom are named, expressing a level of discomfort and strain in their attempts to interact with white students. A Westhampton College sophomore said, “People think you're the janitor in North Court or one of the workers in dining hall just because you're black.” Furthermore, black student athletes -- specifically football players -- felt "double prejudice" as they were seen "first as football player, second as blacks and third as students." The article also describes the newly instated Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, the first black fraternity on campus, when discussing the social life at Richmond. The social life was described as another reason for discontent as there was differences in music and that parties did not typically mix between white and black students. According to the article, every black student interviewed expressed the desire to "'take people for who they are inside - not just at face value.' They said that the University should rise the quota for blacks, increase the ratio of black males to black females and recruit black who are not athletes." </text>
