Chesterman uses metaphors when decribing the abandoned college campus during the Civil War as "a little darkey's kinky head divided off into squares by curl papers." Chesterman also goes onto dicuss the "humilitation of the worst kind," during the war, when Richmond was evacuated due to the approach of Union soldiers. It is described that "a negro regiment was quertered in the college building" and that "these swart occupants of the property proved more obnoxious - and more descrutcuve- than a swarth of cockaroaches in a pantry." Brothers from Lambda Chi Alpha presented the design to the university community, and the mascot made its first appearance at a football game between the University of Richmond and Washington and Lee. Nelson Weber, presumably a Lambda Chi Alpha brother, was invived to a local clothes manufacturing plant to create the eight-limbed costume. The head was designed by a professional artist on Franklin Street in Richmond City. Hat makers and alumni Holmes and Douglas Britton designed the hat, which required special equipment from New York to accomdate the large size. In total, making a Confederate Spider mascot should have cost over $200, but the labor, time, and materials were donated by Etchison Hat Company and Rockingham Clothes. Buddy Mayo donated the mask. Northen tells of the journey of two Confederate soldiers returning home after the Civil War. They stop a Union officer and play "boyish pranks" on him (138). After the men leave the Union officer and make it home, Union soldiers find them in their houses and summon them to the camp, citing that the Union Colonel requested to see them after hearing about the incident. When they are brought to the camp, the two boys are executed, and their fathers find their bodies the next morning. Title A name given to the resource Article "Class cabinet forced to stop selling 'offensive' shirts" Description An account of the resource This article highlights an incident in which the Richmond College Junior Class Cabinet was made to stop selling t-shirts featuring the Confederate spider mascot. Director of Administrative Services Louie Love said that the spider dressed in Confederate uniform was "directly in conflict with what we're trying to address with Common Ground." Love had served on the Common Ground Action Committee, which had attempted to make all university publications more inclusive. The shirt was one of four sold in the Commons--it said "Spider Pride" on the front and had the Confederate spider on the back, which the articles describes as "General Spidey....a spider dressed in a Civil War-era general's jacket with 'U of R' on the jacket." The Collegiate Licensing Department had approved the shirt. Max Sirkin, president of the class cabinet, stated that the design was chosen because the cabinet wanted "something more fearsome than the 'beanie baby' that is the current logo." Shotzberger, the Dean of University College. The committee wanted to place plaques on buildings in Richmond that served as hospitals during the Civil War, which Goddin called "the War Between the States." The building was made for the Virginia Baptist Seminary as a space to move from Spring Farm in rural Henrico County to a community closer to Richmond City. The Columbia building served a multipurpose use: it housed students, the dining hall, the chapel, the President's house, several of the professors (after the Seminary had converted to Richmond College), and served as a Confederate hospital during the Civil War.
