Mayo said that the new look was a "product of five years of work and study" aimed to please students who had previous been unsatisfied with the mascot. The new look spider wore a Confederate uniform, and the article notes that Mayo "wanted the students to understand that the grey coloring of the body of the spider is to offset the official colors of the school." Brothers from Lambda Chi Alpha presented the design to the university community, and the mascot made its first appearance at a football game between the University of Richmond and Washington and Lee. Nelson Weber, presumably a Lambda Chi Alpha brother, was invived to a local clothes manufacturing plant to create the eight-limbed costume. The head was designed by a professional artist on Franklin Street in Richmond City. Hat makers and alumni Holmes and Douglas Britton designed the hat, which required special equipment from New York to accomdate the large size. In total, making a Confederate Spider mascot should have cost over $200, but the labor, time, and materials were donated by Etchison Hat Company and Rockingham Clothes. Buddy Mayo donated the mask. (<a href="http://memory.richmond.edu/items/show/2894" target="_blank">In 1948, students in Lambda Chi Alpha constructed a mascot with help from outside manufacturers and the creator of the Confederate spider mascot, School Shop manager Buddy Mayo</a>.) John Millard, a senior at Richmond College, commissioned and wore the costume. He used a picture of the "UR Spider man" and a Confederate uniform for the design, which he brought to six tailors before a friend made the costume. The saber came from the ROTC Department. Title A name given to the resource Article "Spider Symbol Studied" Description An account of the resource This article reports that the University Student Government Association (USGA) was hoping that the majority of University of Richmond students and employees would approve a new version of the spider mascot, who at the time had been wearing a Confederate uniform since 1948. The new mascot was pictured above the article and described as "a fierce little character with chubby cheeks, a scowl, and two antennas." Ellen Haden was the chair of the USGA Spider Symbol Committee, and is quoted in the article stating "(Ralph) Mayo had designed the first Spider (the one in a Confederate uniform) but it's not an official one because no on approved it, and approval is what we're seeking now." The modern look of the new symbol was meant to "keep up with the new image of the University." The new symbol was designed by Bill Nelson, an illustrator for the Richmond Mercury. Director of Administrative Services Louie Love said that the spider dressed in Confederate uniform was "directly in conflict with what we're trying to address with Common Ground." Love had served on the Common Ground Action Committee, which had attempted to make all university publications more inclusive. The shirt was one of four sold in the Commons--it said "Spider Pride" on the front and had the Confederate spider on the back, which the articles describes as "General Spidey....a spider dressed in a Civil War-era general's jacket with 'U of R' on the jacket." The Collegiate Licensing Department had approved the shirt. Among the history of the foundation of the college, there is discussion of a "colored" server named Tom who Mr. Ryland mentioned often. Description An account of the resource This essay in the 1915 yearbook is written by student Evan Chesterman who is writing about the pride of Richmond ancestry. Chesterman uses metaphors when decribing the abandoned college campus during the Civil War as "a little darkey's kinky head divided off into squares by curl papers." Chesterman also goes onto dicuss the "humilitation of the worst kind," during the war, when Richmond was evacuated due to the approach of Union soldiers.
