The report stated that there was "significant improvement" in the hiring of more female faculty and staff. David Leary, the dean of arts and sciences at the time, said that this improvement was due to an effort made to increase the amount of women in the applicant pool. Emily Mitchell, a junior, expresses her favor of hiring more female faculty as she says the University should be representative of its population and at that point there were more women enrolled. Several aspects of the report have been discussed and are attempting to be implemented as a committee with the following subgroups was created; curriculum, teaching, sexual harassment, student life, and the status and recruitment of women faculty.</text>

Snead was suspended from classroom teaching in November 1988 due to his "sexist and racial remarks in the classroom." His lawsuit against the University was on the basis that being suspended from teaching was a violation of his tenured rights. In response, the University demanded that Snead assure the University that he would not make any more sexual or racist remarks, and he refused. Snead explained how "it's mainly blacks, women and certain religious groups that have this fervor to make you say things just the way they want you to say them." The dispute was eventually settled the day of the trial, and the settlement was kept sealed by order of the court. Snead remained as a paid member of the faculty but was not permitted to teach.</text>

Dean Decker, a biology professor, in which he states that any students who walked out of his class, or were absent during the time of his class would automatically fail the course. This announcement was made in direct response to students who organized a protest against the Gulf War, that had just been announced. Richmond students were encouraged to walk out or skip their classes to head to The Pier where they would discuss the war and show that they were genuinely concerned about this international issue. Amy Addison, a junior, was upset by the announcement and began a petition in opposition, and stated that Decker had tried, "to put a restraint on a basic American freedom." Decker's stance is that students are entitled to their own viewpoint but he does not wish students using his class "to express that viewpoint by walking out or not showing up."</text>

Mrs. Dianne Kennedy Pike, wife of the late Dr. James A. Pike, and associate professor of religion at Wesley University, Dr. John David Maguire, will be speaking. Mrs. Pike is described as the director of the New Focus Foundation, which was started by her late husband. The foundation is attempting to understand the communication of religious ideals outside the institutional structure of the church. Dr. Maguire was a former <a href="https://kinginstitute.stanford.edu/encyclopedia/freedom-rides" target="_blank">Freedom Rider</a>, and was imprisoned in 1961 for "challenging segregated terminal facilities." He was a long time friend of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and was asked after his assassination to take leadership of organizing a memorial. The article explains how he teaches at Wesleyan University in theology and history of religious thought.</text>

Omar accused the University of denying him tenure based on his religion and national origin. Gilbert E. Schill Jr., the University’s lawyer, said he expected the decision. Harris Butler, Omar’s lawyer, could not be reached for comment. Rula Omar, Mohammed’s daughter who is handling the appeals case while Mohammed worked in the Middle East, claims that, “A lot of our information was not allowed in the courtroom and a lot of our witnesses were not allowed […] It was fishy.” However, Schill believes that there was “no error” in the process.</text>

<text>In a 20-4 vote, the faculty of the E. Claiborne Robins School of Business rejects a motion passed by the Arts and Sciences Faculty recommending that “sexual orientation” be added to the University of Richmond’s anti-discrimination policy. The faculty of Arts and Sciences approved this recommendation on the condition that it attain further approval from the Business School, Law School, Administration, and Trustees before implementation. According to R. Clifton Poole, Dean of the Business School, the motion was born out of a discussion surrounding student discrimination in the ROTC program on campus, and that the motion concealed a “hidden agenda,” one that attempts to remove the ROTC program from campus. Joseph D. Harbaugh, dean of The T.C. Williams School of Law, disapproves of the recommendation, claiming he has “…no evidence that American business uses sexual orientation as an employment standard.” Without this evidence, he believes discrimination based on sexual orientation is not applicable to the policies of the American Association of Law Schools, which the school operates under. A member of the University of Richmond’s Lambda Coalition spoke about this motion, explaining that the organization does not wish for the removal of the ROTC program from campus, but instead pleads for a change in the homophobic policies of the Department of Defense.</text>

Whitney cites the racist actions of his former roommate and the racist exclusion he faces at white fraternity lodges as examples of being invisible on campus. He further describes a language professor’s racist devaluation of his academic and intellectual knowledge because of Whitney’s race. He attributes some of his invisibility to his physical stature, explaining, “I exist only if I have the bulging muscles, the strong, masculine face, the large-framed body” that characterizes athletes. In this way, he claims his “invisibility clouds his relationships with [his] color."</text>

<text>This article talks about the recent increase in membership in Safe Zone, a group committed to supporting students questioning their sexuality. It talks about how faculty are now displaying Safe Zone stickers on their doors to indicate that they are available to talk with students who may be questioning their sexuality. The program included one-on-one counsel in a partnership with Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), sponsored training for police on how to handle hate crimes, and campus-wide programming to increase awareness. Associate professor of philosophy Ladelie McWhorter said that "as long as society as a whole still discriminates against the rights of individuals based on their sexual orientations, programs like Safe Zone are absolutely essential to support those individuals."</text>
