Common Ground director Glyn Hughes explains that Greek life on campus is heteronormative, meaning that it assumes everyone in the community is heterosexual. Although Greek leaders disagree that fraternities and sororities add to the homophobic atmosphere of University of Richmond’s campus, gay 2008 graduate Jason Tseng, along with other LGBTQ+ students, claim that the University is a, “…hostile climate for queer people.” This hostility can be attributed in part to gender segregated housing and the coordinate college system in general, says Tseng. Despite administrative efforts to promote campus inclusivity by Strategic Plan, Hughs notes that change in campus culture must come from students as well. In terms of promoting LGBTQ+ visibility on campus, Andy Gurka, area coordinator for the University Forest Apartments, discusses his experience as gay on campus and concludes that “being out has been a benefit to the community."</text>

As both a University of Richmond graduate and current Administrative Coordinator for Rhetoric and Communication Studies, Mundle has had a unique perspective as a current and former member of campus. Reminiscing her days as a commuter student, Mundle contrasts the homogeneous student body of the 80s to the more diverse campus composition of today. Mundle reflects on her educational and social life growing up a Richmond native leading to her admission to the University of Richmond.

Robin Mundle graduated from University of Richmond's Westhampton College in 1985, majoring in Political Science. A native to Richmond, she graduated from Douglas Freeman High School in Henrico VA in 1981. She is currently the Administrative Coordinator for Rhetoric and Communication Studies Department and the Writing Center at the University of Richmond.
</text>

Gerald Quigg, the Vice President of University Relations, described the magazine as “gross and demonstrating a lack of education.” Quigg claimed that he was not censoring the magazine, but did question its appropriateness and if it should continue to be published. The magazine had been removed from the admissions office and would no longer be sent to alumni, according to vice president for student affairs Leonard Goldberg. Steven Barza was the magazine's advisor, and Jeff Fowler was the editor. Though Quigg's memo did not state which material was offensive, two poems by senior Sunni McMillan were noted by the article.</text>

                <text>This article desribes the process through which Anita Bryant, a singer and opponent of civil rights for LGBTQ individuals, was invited to the Robins Center on October 8, 1977. Bryant's efforts led to repeals of anti-discriminiation on the basis of sexual orientation ordinances and further discrimination against LGBTQ people across the country. Bryant had been invited to perform at a rally to kick of the ACTION program in Richmond, designed by the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention to "assist local chuches in recruiting more people for Bible study in their Sunday schools." Bryant was asked to attend the rally to perform a "concert of sacred music." Dr. Linwood Horne, associate chaplain at the University of Richmond, assited in the planning. According to Dr. Winford Hendrix of Richmond's First Baptist Church, the contract with Bryant was signed before "Bryan't involvement in the controvery over homosexual rights" and the churches did not feel they could break it. The event was not public, and there would be no press conference, but would involve an autograph signing and the sale of books. Horne specified that Bryant was not being sponsored by the Chaplain's Office, but the location was chosen partially because of the university's Baptist affiliation.

The Richmond Citizens for Gay and Lesbian Rights (RCFLR) planned a protest event for the same day in Monroe Park. RCFLR planned to educate through speakers about the "discrimination that is occuring against gays and lesbians."
</text>

Over the course of the forty minute interview, Mitchell shares stories and reflections from his time at the University of Richmond from 1976-1980. He speaks about his childhood experiences moving from a small Texas town to Washington D.C., time in the ROTC program, relationships with faculty members and athletic staff, experiences as a Black student-athlete on the football team, the relationships between Black students from the United States and Black international students, interactions with white students in housing and social life, how his time at the University of Richmond affected his professional career, and his passion for photography--which keeps him a staple at University of Richmond sporting events to this day.

Gregory Mitchell was born in Belton, Texas just outside of Ft. Hood. When his Step-Father retired from the the Army, he moved his family to Washington, DC where Greg attended DC public schools. While attending Anacostia High School, Greg was recruited to play football at UR. He played on both offense & defense for Coach Jim Tait. While attending UR he met Marilyn Branch who he later married and they have two adult children. Greg initially thought he wanted a career in law enforcement, but after briefly working in a juvenile correctional facility, he reached out to a UR alum and got an interview with Philip Morris, USA. He was hired as a line supervisor in a tobacco processing factory. He worked in several different positions, departments and plants within PMUSA and retired after 31 years with the company.
Since retirement, Greg has been able to return to his love of photography. He does sports photography for several local high schools and has been a volunteer sports photographer for UR for several years.

Click here to listen to his joint interview with his wife, Marilyn Branch-Mitchell.</text>
