<text>This is the Annual Report from the Office of Registrar and Director of Admissions for Richmond College submitted by the Director of Admissions, Thomas N. Pollard, Jr., to President George M. Modlin for the 1970-1971 academic school year. That year, Richmond College had 1,345 students, which was a decline in attendance compared to the previous year that had 1,382. More than half of the student body, 53.8%, of students were from Virginia, but outside of Richmond They also had seven foreign students. 78 students withdrew after the first semester for either being academically deficient, transferring to the Business School, or graduating. 733 students were accepted but only 366 enrolled. The Registrar's Office had a 66% turnover in staff for that year. However, the writer wasn't surprised because of the low salaries of those doing clerical work. They hoped that the duties and purpose of the Registrar could be consolidated and centralized. Pollard also claimed that the college was not as popular with highly qualified students. The Office of Admissions received lists of qualified black and minority students from programs and organizations like Project Access, College Entrance Examination Board, and the National Scholarship Service and Fund for Negro Students. The office also sent personal letters from the office with information about the University to black and minority students. A student committee suggested that the University needed an increase in publicity, have better information on financial aid, and use current students in recruiting. They concluded the report with recommendations and a proposed budget of $15,810, which was a $10,000 proposed increase in funding from the previous year.</text>

Gerald Quigg, the Vice President of University Relations, described the magazine as &ldquo;gross and demonstrating a lack of education.&rdquo; Quigg claimed that he was not censoring the magazine, but did question its appropriateness and if it should continue to be published. The magazine had been removed from the admissions office and would no longer be sent to alumni, according to vice president for student affairs Leonard Goldberg. Steven Barza was the magazine's advisor, and Jeff Fowler was the editor. Though Quigg's memo did not state which material was offensive, two poems by senior Sunni McMillan were noted by the article.</text>

The article details the Alumni Day activities, including a luncheon, classroom visitation, and baseball game, among other activities. During the luncheon, alumni leaders, and seniors from Richmond College and School of Business Administration were given special recognition. One photo titled "Old Friends Meet" shows an alumnus, Watkins Fugate, RC '32, talking with an African American staff member. The caption states that Fugate is chatting "with an old friend, the ageless Jackson who presided at the coffee urn." Jackson is the only African American noted on the page.</text>

<text>This article desribes the process through which Anita Bryant, a singer and opponent of civil rights for LGBTQ individuals, was invited to the Robins Center on October 8, 1977. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anita_Bryant#Political_campaigning" target="_blank">Bryant's efforts led to repeals of anti-discriminiation on the basis of sexual orientation ordinances and further discrimination against LGBTQ people across the country.</a> Bryant had been invited to perform at a rally to kick of the ACTION program in Richmond, designed by the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention to "assist local chuches in recruiting more people for Bible study in their Sunday schools." Bryant was asked to attend the rally to perform a "concert of sacred music." Dr. Linwood Horne, associate chaplain at the University of Richmond, assited in the planning. According to Dr. Winford Hendrix of Richmond's First Baptist Church, the contract with Bryant was signed before "Bryan't involvement in the controvery over homosexual rights" and the churches did not feel they could break it. The event was not public, and there would be no press conference, but would involve an autograph signing and the sale of books. Horne specified that Bryant was not being sponsored by the Chaplain's Office, but the location was chosen partially because of the university's Baptist affiliation.
<p>The Richmond Citizens for Gay and Lesbian Rights (RCFLR) planned a protest event for the same day in Monroe Park. RCFLR planned to educate through speakers about the "discrimination that is occuring against gays and lesbians."</p></text>

<text>This article from the Alumni Bulletin of Spring 1951 was told from the perspective of Broadus Mitchell, the oldest son of Samuel Chiles Mitchell. Samuel Chiles Mitchell taught on the "Old Campus" in downtown Richmond. The essay details what life was like for the children of professors living in a college campus environment. Mitchell wrote about the period from roughly 1895-1905, when about six children of professors or administrators were living, playing, and growing up on the Old Campus. The article told about the formal and informal teachers of the children; including the students on campus and the predominantly African American housekeeping and groundskeeping staff. Mitchell documented the names and personality of the African American staff that the children interacted with on campus, and particularly spoke about Willie James, the cook and counselor in their home. Of Willie James, Mitchell wrote, "I cannot think without affectionate gratitude for her combination of tenderness and stern discipline that sprang equally from her generous heart. It is well-recognized that southern children often had two mothers...", which signifies the prominent role that some African American employees played in the raising of white children on the University campus. The tone of this article implies that the children's parents were not very present in their lives, and instead, that they were raised primarily by the campus employees. Of this Mitchell wrote, "I have not said much of our parents. Happily some survive to receive our gratitude for the liberty they gave us." </text>

<text>This article describes a speech given by Dave Meggyesy, a former professional football player and author, in the Cannon Memorial Chapel the previous Thursday. Meggyesy offered his opinion on the university’s athletic department, in particular the “dehumanizing aspect of the sport” of football as caused by members of the athletic staff. Meggyesy felt that his time playing football was a theatrical production where athletes lives are constantly controlled by self-appointed positions of authority. He criticizes the way many coaches treat their players, particularly on the football team, and that the control of the athletic department is by “a few individuals funneling all the money in just to get their names on buildings, with the athletes only being used as pawns.” Meggyesy suggests that all University of Richmond students should come together and run the athletic department on their own to avoid this corrupt system.</text>

<text>This <em>Collegian</em> article sheds light on the Richmond gay bar Godfrey’s as a source of refuge for LGBTQ+ students who attend the University of Richmond and wish for an alternative to Greek affiliated events. Common Ground director Glyn Hughes explains that Greek life on campus is heteronormative, meaning that it assumes everyone in the community is heterosexual. Although Greek leaders disagree that fraternities and sororities add to the homophobic atmosphere of University of Richmond’s campus, gay 2008 graduate Jason Tseng, along with other LGBTQ+ students, claim that the University is a, “…hostile climate for queer people.” This hostility can be attributed in part to gender segregated housing and the coordinate college system in general, says Tseng. Despite administrative efforts to promote campus inclusivity by Strategic Plan, Hughs notes that change in campus culture must come from students as well. In terms of promoting LGBTQ+ visibility on campus, Andy Gurka, area coordinator for the University Forest Apartments, discusses his experience as gay on campus and concludes that “being out has been a benefit to the community."</text>
