Only 12% of the university’s undergraduates identify as African-American, Native American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian or biracial. From the black community on campus, “approximately 40%... receive the University’s CIGNA Scholarship." Many student statements appear in the article that voice veiled frustration with the university’s lack of diversity, which is followed by an example in which a student transfers to a different institution. The lack of support from the university for minority students is glossed over by the university’s statement that "...students express negative feelings their first year because of the tremendous amount of growing they go through.” Although there are many obstacles in the way of students of color, organizations such as the Multicultural Student Union (MSU), International Student Union, Umoja Gospel Choir, Ngoma African Company and many other multicultural groups provide safe spaces for those in need.</text>

She spoke at the University of Richmond, advocating her view that "Southern women novelists who condoned slavery should be read today." She claims that "these women were not Nazis" and that if we exclude all literature that accepts slavery it will come at a great cost to literature. Fox-Genovese also describes the literary war of the 1850s which was between Southern women writers, wishing to preserve the Southern tradition of slaveholding, and Northern women who wished to abolish slavery. Fox-Genovese is firm in her belief that these Southern women writers should be taken seriously despite the fact that "they're not, probably, as good as Edgar Allan Poe and (Nathaniel) Hawthorne."</text>

Marvin Menkes of Deal, N.J. who participated in surveying the education of black people in Richmond stated that "the story of education for the Negro in Richmond is a success story" and that "Negro citizens of Richmond have been luckier than their country cousins who have comparatively little offered to them." Menkes also traces the education of black Richmonders from colonial times to the 1950s. Despite the fact that Menkes acknowledges the fact that the education gap was created due to slavery, he also states that at that time in Richmond schools "there is an equality of pay for white and Negro teachers with equal certificates." Menkes claims that the schools are equal in resources, supplies, and staff. During this time, schools were segregated.</text>
