The article described Freeman's work as a writer, academic, and educator as well as his connection to the University of Richmond. Freeman was an alumnus and former member of the administration. The article told of his childhood in Lynchburg, VA and the "strict upbringing he received from his father, a confederate soldier." The article argued that Freeman's childhood led to his conservative values and traditional outlooks, including his disapproval of women enrolling in Richmond College classes. The article went on to describe Freeman's involvement in <em>The Messenger, The Richmond News Leader</em>, and his work as a radio broadcaster. The article concluded with a list of book publications and the awards they have received.</text>

<text>This article from the <em>Collegian</em> addresses the controversy surrounding the University of Richmond’s water polo club’s sale of calendars featuring photos of a different Westhampton and School of Business Administration student each month. Steven White, a member of the club, took the idea from a similar calendar at Clemson University, which featured several women in bikinis, which was "toned...down" for the UR version. Stephanie Bennett, Westhampton College dean finds the calendars inappropriate and finds little distinguishment from this fundraiser to other forms of objectification of women in advertising. A number of participants, including Amy Harvey, Michelle Preston, Leslie Jureit, and Carter Wilson, and Patti Nolan, and had voiced their opinion that this fundraiser is in good taste and they didn't mind the process of being selected based on their yearbook photos. The water polo team hopes to break even on this project and gain enough funds for travel and equipment. Jureit noted that she had heard some comments: "While men only tease her, some women have made mean remarks."</text>

She discussed things she believed every student should acquire before she graduates from college, including moral honesty, respect for scholarship, and four years of exercise and sensible living. She also responded to an article that claimed that Chinese and Japanese men should not be educated in America because the American education system is "too young for their oriental civilization." <text>This article considers the University of Richmond's attempts to comply with Title IX requirements through adding a women's soccer team to the University's athletic department. A school is considered compliant with Title IX if they have equal amounts of men and women participating in sports or if there is shown to be a history of women's program expansion. Ruth Goehring, the associate athletic director, said that "We're [UR] probably 60-40 in participation, which is why we added soccer to get us closer to the 50-50 proportionality." One of the areas that the school's needs the most improvement in is the availability of athletic scholarships for women, but the question is where to divert funding from in order to pay for those scholarships.</text>

In her time as a student, Gill was on the 1928 Sophomore Women play committee, the 1929 vice president of the Debaters club, and the Assistant Editor of the 1929 <em>Messenger.</em> Gill was also author of the story "Tea-Shop Reminiscences", which discusses the traditional Chinese Tea-Room. This article announced both the May Queen court celebration and the Indian Pageant that was to follow. The subtitles of this article state "Make plans for Participation in Indian Pageant at Yorktown", "Present Pocahontas", and "May Day Indian Prologue in the wooden dell to be Followed by Main Event in Greek Theater", inviting students to participate in an afternoon of fun by visiting a replica of Indian culture. After the 1931 May Queen celebration, students arrived to the dell to witness "the colorful element of Indian life, portrayed by wigwams in the dell, birch canoes, and Indian war dances." It was also noted that a Pocahontas impersonator would be accompanying Gill to her court in the Greek Theater.</text>

<text>This article describes the steps that the University of Richmond took in order to bring sororities to Westhampton College. After the faculty committee voted to &ldquo;recommend the institution of sororities at the University,&rdquo; the social life committee reviewed the recommendation and forwarded it to the student affairs committee of the Board of Trustees. Once the Board of Trustees approved the recommendation, Alison Bartel, assistant director of Student Activities, took over the organization of Greek Life on campus and contacted the National Panhellenic Council. A committee was set up in order to review the presentations by each of the (26) national sororities and to vote on which ones were best fit for the University of Richmond. Although there are many who are in favor of establishing sororities on campus, others, like history professor Martin J. Ryle, believe that they will turn out to be exactly like fraternities in that they may be exclusive and harmful to the student social life.</text>
