<text>The Winter 1971 Alumni Bulletin features an image and accompanying profile of Irene Ebhomielen of Nigeria. Ebhomielen was an international student on the University of Richmond campus, attending the University partly because of the financial assistance of the Westhampton College YWCA. Ebhomielen was the 15th student to come to the United States and Westhampton in the YWCA program’s 20-year history. The article mentions Ebhomielen’s plans to receive a bachelor of arts degree and then continuing to study for a master’s degree. The YWCA was led by Jean Mahaffey, who stated that “The Westhampton students are very enthusiastic and energetic about being involved in community action projects.” Mahaffry also said, “The Westhampton women have a tremendous amount of insight and understanding into the human situation. They are looking for outlets through which to use their concern for humanity.”</text>

The article discusses the students' perspective on the need for changes on campus. Both Nock and Benfield explained that "they would like to see a unified student government representing all divisions of the university." Nock and Benfield spoke about the importance of administration, faculty, and students being represented in student government for a plurality of opinions. When discussing the future, Nock explained, “the school should be a well-balanced, integrated university, with good facilities and atmosphere." Both Benfield and Nock said that "the university should recruit more out of state students and more minority students."</text>

<text>This article in the Collegian reported on sit-down demonstrations by students at Virginia State College in Petersburg. The demonstrations at the historically black college were meant to work towards "freedom of movement and action in a free society." Dr. Harris, chairman of the education division of Virginia State, visited the University of Richmond at the request of the sociology department. During his visit, Dr. Harris explained his thoughts on the demonstrations. He said, "In spite of the numerous shifts and changes in all other aspects of life in the South, racial patterns, for the most part, have remained fixed." Dr. Harris commented that there was much to justify the decisions of students to participate in sit-downs as racism is a "moral issue that is not detached from the constitution." The sit-downs did not have to be the only means of achieving freedom, but Dr. Harris believed that students would only be willing to demonstrate differently if they see a "crack in the wall" during these current demonstrations.</text>
