Students said that they would not have attended Richmond if they heard the song before committing to Richmond. Richmond College Registrar said that the issue was not that important and would have no effect on recruiting students. The Registrar said that most black students would not find out about the song. Three black students said hearing the song during recruitment would make them change their mind about Richmond and agreed that black enrollment will decrease because of it. One student said the song should be abolished because it represents the Old South and a racist attitude. Another student said it brings back memories of the Old South, including slavery and bondage. The student said the song is played so often it represents a theme song for the university. A third student said he thought the school was more liberal than it actually is. All of the black students interviewed said hearing the song would make black recruits uncomfortable. There is also going to be a $400 tuition increase, but the Registrar did not believe that will have a significant effect on recruiting because there will be a proportionate increase in financial aid.</text>

<text>This article describes the athletic eligibility problem at University of Richmond. The issue involves several athletes who do not have the required 1.6 GPA. The NCAA previously contacted Richmond about the average, which the athletic director said would not be an issue and they would just have to sign a paper saying all the athletes had the required minimum GPA; but the paper was never signed. The article states that the paper will not be signed until Richmond's new eligibility standards go into effect, which will allow the school to recruit athletes with a GPA lower than 1.6, but the new requirements still follow NCAA rules. While the athletic department works on the eligibility issue, Richmond teams cannot compete in any post-season competition. A number of track athletes were not able to go to the NCAA tournament, including Norman Williams, the team's first black athlete. The athletes know it is a complex issue that will not be fixed in one season. They are confident that by the next season the issue will be cleared up and they will be able to go to nationals. The baseball team could also be affected by this issue. If the team wins the South Carolina crown, they will not be able to play in any NCAA post-season playoffs.</text>

<text>This article talks about how freshman Norman Williams was the highlight of the recent VMI relays for the Spiders after breaking the long jump record. Williams broke the 16-year-old record by 2 inches. As a freshman, he competed in the triple jump, hurdles, sprints, and mile. Williams is originally from Virginia Beach and averaged 22 points per meet in high school; he also scored more points in the VHSL State Indoor Meet than anyone had ever scored. His highest scoring collegiate meets were against VMI and a tri-meet with Wake Forest and Lynchburg. His coach has been very happy with his performance so far and believes he will have a bright future, for both himself and the team ahead. Williams was the first black student on the track and field team, and the first black student at the university to receive a full scholarship for athletics.</text>

According to Pruden, UR students yelled racial insults, booed, and sang a rendition of "Dixie." Pruden was an assistant principal at a local high school where he had encouraged black students, athletes and scholars, to consider the University of Richmond. This event was forcing him to reconsider, noting that when he attended UR similar incidents occurred--he recalls "some of my classmates hollering racial insults at Davidson's first black basketball player as he poured in the baskets." Pruden concludes: "I had hoped that one day such redneck behavior would disappear from our campus, and that we could represent ourselves as a liberally-educated community dedicated to, among other things, the brotherhood of man. However, it seems we have not yet shaken off the yoke of racism entirely."</text>

<text>This anonymous opinion piece begins by noting that Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi would be speaking at the University of Richmond's commencement, and asks the questions: "Isn't it ironic to have a black head of state at the University of Richmond?" The opinion piece goes on to address how Moi's presence in Richmond was going to bring a lot of publicity that the administration was looking for, but his speech was also going to be beneficial to the graduating students. President Moi being the speaker would also bring awareness to the lack of diversity on campus. The writer says: "How many blacks do you se and what roles do they fill here at this enlightened liberal arts college?" They note that black people on campus could most often be seen in service jobs, and when they were students, they were often student athletes. The writer goes on to ask "Are we a bunch of racists, or, at least, does the Administration carry on racist policies?" Their answer is: "Yes, but our brand of racism is not overt and obnoxious." The writer states that while admissions does not weed out black students, the student population--"upper-middle class, lily-white preppies who have had little contact with non-whites"--has a negative effect on the retention of black students. The writer concludes with a hopeful outlook on President Moi's visit to the campus.</text>
