According to the article, the Committee on Sororities originally intended for black women to learn and enjoy the same experience as the white women on campus, but soon realized two factors that would make that difficult: First, many white female students coming to the university had previous ties with Sororities on campus through siblings, parents, grandparents, etc. This created an unequal advantage/familiarity with the Greek system for those students over black students. Second, the committee realized that black women needed their own space to share their experiences and bond over being black women. Black students interviewed for this article expressed the need for black sororities on campus not only for themselves, but for white people to learn more about black culture. If you were a white student you were charged $1.00 and if you were an ethnic minority you were charged $0.80; if you signed a petition to get rid of the race check box on the University's application, you received a cookie for free. The article notes that the Liberty Society's main argument was centralized on the University of Michigan's 150 points system in which racial minorities received an automatic 20 points addition to their name. The first was written by student Danielle Orron who wrote in support of affirmative action. In her piece, Orron followed a "question-answer" style of writing in which she asks the reader to "imagine you are ___," followed by "Affirmative action says you ____." In this way, she challenges the reader to place themselves in the position that those who benefit from affirmative action are in, and then reaffirms them by dismissing the stereotypes held against these people. The second piece, written by student Michael Herbert, was in opposition of affirmative action, but rather than writing solely his opinion, instead, Herbert focused on the way the discussion was held. According to Herbert, after a comment made by classics department professor, Julie Laskaris, his peers were "so intimidated by Larskaris' statements they became unwilling to offer their opinions." Students who were interviewed described moments in which they were excluded from the dominant culture on campus, including moments where some were mistaken as staff. In addition, the interviewees described the cultural differences on campus, namely that most of the student population came from private schools, and thus had no previous interactions with black people.The article interviews several black students, none of whom are named, expressing a level of discomfort and strain in their attempts to interact with white students. A Westhampton College sophomore said, “People think you're the janitor in North Court or one of the workers in dining hall just because you're black.” Furthermore, black student athletes -- specifically football players -- felt "double prejudice" as they were seen "first as football player, second as blacks and third as students." The article also describes the newly instated Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, the first black fraternity on campus, when discussing the social life at Richmond. The social life was described as another reason for discontent as there was differences in music and that parties did not typically mix between white and black students.
