<text>This article -- published on October 23, 1980, in <em>The Collegian</em> -- describes the discontent that black students had toward the way students, faculty, and even parents treated them at the University of Richmond. Students who were interviewed described moments in which they were excluded from the dominant culture on campus, including moments where some were mistaken as staff. In addition, the interviewees described the cultural differences on campus, namely that most of the student population came from private schools, and thus had no previous interactions with black people. The article interviews several black students, none of whom are named, expressing a level of discomfort and strain in their attempts to interact with white students. A Westhampton College sophomore said, “People think you're the janitor in North Court or one of the workers in dining hall just because you're black.” Furthermore, black student athletes -- specifically football players -- felt "double prejudice" as they were seen "first as football player, second as blacks and third as students." The article also describes the newly instated Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, the first black fraternity on campus, when discussing the social life at Richmond. The social life was described as another reason for discontent as there was differences in music and that parties did not typically mix between white and black students. According to the article, every black student interviewed expressed the desire to "'take people for who they are inside - not just at face value.' They said that the University should rise the quota for blacks, increase the ratio of black males to black females and recruit black who are not athletes." </text>

In this article, Pi Kappa Alpha accuses Phi Beta Sigma's of being an ineligible voting member of the IFC because the organization had not paid Rush fees and had not attended multiple IFC meetings. Phi Beta Sigma president, Clayton White, contended these accusations on the basis that the organization did not pay Rush fees because members did not rush in the fall semester, and that the organization had never been penalized for missing the meetings by the IFC; thus the fraternity was still an eligible voting member. Phi Beta Sigma was the first black fraternity on the University of Richmond campus.</text>

<text><em>The Collegian</em> published this article on April 12, 1990. This article discusses the lack of diversity at the University of Richmond, specifically focusing on the lack of racial diversity. The article expresses concerns that both students and faculty have in what they describe as a "eurocentric" curriculum. Another concern that was addressed was the lack of cross-cultural student interactions. Mcquell Green, a Richmond College freshman, stated that most multi-cultural events were sponsored by the Multicultural Student Union, and that a few white people actually participated in these events. In addition, Green recounted a story in which a white woman persistently argued with him as to whether or not he was a basketball player. Green commented that this had frustrated him as "there are lots of white students that are bigger than me and people don't go around asking them if they're athletes." Tracey Jansen, a Westhampton College senior, commented that there were not many opportunities for black and white students to interact because social life was dominated by fraternities.</text>

In the article, done expressed her "alienation" at the University, noting its lack of diversity and community, "I felt alienated here...it's a place that's too conservative for me and not diverse enough." Dunne had previously attended the University of Toronto and the University of Alfred, both of which she had described as being more diverse in terms of gender, race, and ethnicity. During her time at the University of Richmond, Dunne had helped create a "Race and Gender Forum" that met weekly. Dunne was hired on a tenured track position, but left after a year of teaching.</text>

<text>This Op-Ed was published in <em>The Collegian</em> in 1989 and written by student, Rick Mayes. In this article, Mayes responds to a past article written by student Harvey Whitney. In his piece, Mayes criticizes Whitney as being divisive and for promoting black supremacy. He compares Whitney to Malcolm X, and notes that the rhetoric that X had used was similar to that of Adolf Hitler. Mayes argues that "our society doesn't even flinch when people state such 'Black Panther' type accusations in the paper." Mayes also argues that if a white person had used the same rhetoric for white people, they would be expelled and arrested. Mayes argues that Whitney is not reaching toward a common goal of "color-blindness" and holds onto the past of slavery and "past racial climates." He capitalizes "past" to emphasize his point.</text>

<text>This article published on October 19, 1989, in <em>The Collegian</em>, discusses the possible addition of black sororities to the University of Richmond -- Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta. According to the article, the Committee on Sororities originally intended for black women to learn and enjoy the same experience as the white women on campus, but soon realized two factors that would make that difficult: First, many white female students coming to the university had previous ties with Sororities on campus through siblings, parents, grandparents, etc. This created an unequal advantage/familiarity with the Greek system for those students over black students. Second, the committee realized that black women needed their own space to share their experiences and bond over being black women. Black students interviewed for this article expressed the need for black sororities on campus not only for themselves, but for white people to learn more about black culture. Karen Young, an ECRSB junior&nbsp;said: "... I have learned a lot about white sororities, what they do and what they stand for...But I also feel that just as I learned, they [white students] should have the opportunity to learn about black sororities." This follows the establishment of the first black fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma, in 1980.</text>

The dining hall staff -- composed mostly of racial minorities -- decided on a theme called "Revival of the 60s." The first black student was not allowed to integrate onto the main campus of UR until 1968. According to Kenneth Davis, manager of Food Services, historical memorabilia and posters of black leaders would be posted around the dining hall and meat "representative of the theme" would be served. The performances during Black History Month would be sponsored by the Multicultural Student Union whose president, Camisha Jones, explains how the organization was sponsoring most of the events in collaboration with other student organizations. Delta Sigma Theta member, Nikki Anderson, was also interviewed and explained that the sorority was working the Young Democrats to bring Richmond mayor Walter Kenney to speak at an event.</text>

The title of the article uses "colonizes" the university rather than is established or other adequate substitutes. The article focuses on members and associates of the sorority -- Jennifer McClellan, Tanya Tyree, Robin Washington, Regina Hill -- who described some of the goals, purposes, and struggles of the process. It is mentioned quite early on in the article that the girls did not find discrimination from the pre-existing white sororities; however, Washington does state that the chartering of Delta Sigma Theta was met with resistance. Further in the article the author describes the origin of the sorority and the ideologies left behind by its founders.</text>
