Description An account of the resource This newspaper article from the March 28, 1983 issue of the Richmond Times-Dispatch discusses the unique set design of the University Players' production of Waiting for Godot. The director John Countryman and set designer Maury Hancock, a UR senior, describe the set as a "nuclear holocaust," featuring a 600-pound metal tree covered with mattress foam and chicken wire, and featuring seven UR actresses who were to become part of the set. The production was to be performed that April, and was the UR Players' entry into the American College Theater Festival. According to the article, the theatre department and the office of the President both received several complaints from season ticket holders regarding the “obscenities” in the script. Description An account of the resource This is a program for the 1984 University Players' production of Hiawatha, directed by Jack Welsh. The play is inspired by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem "The Song of Hiawatha," adapted by Michael Bognadov and with music by Jeff Teare. As well as including a listing of the cast and production staff, the program includes an insert describing the life of Hiawatha, described as "an Indian who lived some five-hundred years ago", and defines some terms used in the play, from an unidentified Native American language. The play featured a cast of fourteen people, including two swings; bios of these cast members are not included, and it is unknown if any of these actors portraying Native Americans are Native themselves.
