Boatwrights correspondences, is a public apology given to the university community for the recent racist manner in which Mr. Russell Jones had been treated. When Mr. Jones had visited, on invitation, to give a lecture, he was denied entry into the dining hall on the basis of his race. The students, in a document published in the Collegian entitled "We the Students," protested against the act. This document was the Board of Trustees' apology, in which they acknowledged the hypocrisy an bigotry of the event, and explain that, through such actions, their claims for Christian acts of brotherhood are invalidated. While Boatwright had been away in Florida with his wife, Dean Keller left a disapproving note for president Boatwright, and Dr. Douglas S. Freeman, having received notice of the event from Mr. William Rodenheiser, had written the President to inform him of the matter. His letter is dated 10 days after the publication of the petition. Douglas suggests that Boatwright take the matter to the Executive Committee (which he later does) and suggests that Boatwright is in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" sort of situation. While in his reply, Boatwright later claimed that it would be an easy matter to resolve, his dismissive response given to the newspaper was said to be approved by the Board of Trustees, but it sent a message of disapproval while the Board of Trustees' previous message had been apologetic. Julia Willis explains what conspired. Mr. Jones had visited the university in order to introduce the Intercollegiate Council, also called the RIC (Richmond Intercollegiate Council) and the ICC. Other articles explain that the RIC held conversations about race and equality at its foundation. Upon his denial into the dining hall and his dismissal to the "back room," students agreed that such treatment of their guest was unacceptable, and they wrote this letter as a response. Willis rebukes the university for their policies, and says that the school's rejection of a person based on his skin color is worse than those conservatives who are blatantly racist. She says that such blatant racism at least adheres to their stated principles. The rejection of Mr. Jones, however, is hypocritical and contradictory to the values of Christian inclusion that the university claims to support. The previous letter by George Iggers in May 1944 reproached the S.C. Mitchell Literary Society for the prejudice that they demonstrated in putting restrictions upon the discussion about racial relations. This letter offers justification for the S.C. Mitchell Literary Society, explaining that the rider to their constitutional amendment, which granted the society president the right to stop any conversation that he deemed hindering to the regular procedures of the meeting. The President explains that "This rider was a very necessary thing in that a small minority in the Society was obsessed [sic] with the idea of racial equality and was so intent I upon spreading its principles that the Society had little time for anything else." He also explains that the accusation that the literary society sought to hide the development is false, because they simply were trying to keep Iggers accusatory letter out of the paper until they had crafted a response. Iggers protested the motion for all discussion of "the racial problem" to be banned under the "pretext that...[it] had been discussed too thoroughly at previous meetings." Cotten says that the adoption was done in the spirit of Christmas, and that they entertained a child named Hung Woo. Cotten then claims to have interviewed the visitor and asked him about the origin of his name. He tells a story of how in Ancient China, a jury of elders was hung when they could not decide whether or not they should woo. Thus, the child was named in honor of that event.
