<text>An article noting a reaction to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination by some of the members of the University of Richmond. A group of 170 Westhampton College students wrote a letter to various political officials including Richmond Mayor Morrill M. Crowe, Governor Mills E. Godwin Jr., and Senator Harry F. Byrd Jr., among many others, asking that in the wake of King's death, these officials "re-evaluate the positions which we have taken on matters of civil rights in recent years..." The letter urged action to avoid further tragedies and injustices. There was a second statement issued by Dr. William Smith, the director of Religious Activities, about King's death. It stated that the undersigned students, faculty, staff, and friends of the University wished to express their sorrow at King's death, their concern that his cause will be lost in disillusion and violence, and their pledge to take a more "active concern for and involvement in the cause of justice for all men."</text>

The visitation day had been proposed in October to introduce black students to the campus and encourage them to join the community. All but one high school in the Richmond-Henrico-Chesterfield area was represented among the 65 students who attended. Some students mentioned not knowing where or what the University was. The day included registration, campus tours, a speech by President Modlin, discussions by various professors and faculty of the services available, and a "Raft Debate" for informative entertainment. All those involved with the program felt it was a success at opening the university and creating a "two way avenue for progress."</text>

<text>This article recounts controversy surrounding the playing of the song "Dixie" during school events. Richmond College student government, led by Steve Nock, moved to "restrain" the use of the song "Dixie" during school events, and the issue of the appropriateness of Dixie consumed the first several pages of the <em>Collegian</em>. Some students argued the song was not offensive, saying some students "shouldn't be so small as to be offended by a bunch of words." Stanley Davis, a black student at the University, argued that Dixie was offensive and a symbol of the Old South and repression. Davis said it would be difficult for Richmond to encourage black students to attend while playing a song that created a certain kind of "attitude" and "image" about the University. Senior Terry Anderson felt the song kept Richmond from having a progressive image, and another student felt that if a song is offensive to even a small minority, it is "common courtesy" to cease playing it.</text>

<text>A letter to the editor of the Collegian signed by 250 students on campus in response to Eva Wong's disciplining following the Westhampton College Song Contest. Wong, invited a friend from Union Theological Seminary, who was a black student originally from the Congo, to the Song Contest. Wong was advised to get permission from university officials, which she was denied by the President. University President George Modlin referred to the university policy that wanted to keep "conditions similar to those in students' homes and churches...." Wong ignored this decision, and brought her friend anyway, resulting in her being placed on disciplinary probation. There was debate about whether this constituted actual racial discrimination. The University's official stance was to discipline Wong for defying university policy. The signed a letter in response stated that it was un-Christian of the university to ban a black student, especially an "intelligent and well-mannered student of the Christian ministry," from attending events on the campus. The letter also states "We know of no other way to classify such action but race discrimination."</text>
