The report stated that there was "significant improvement" in the hiring of more female faculty and staff. David Leary, the dean of arts and sciences at the time, said that this improvement was due to an effort made to increase the amount of women in the applicant pool. Emily Mitchell, a junior, expresses her favor of hiring more female faculty as she says the University should be representative of its population and at that point there were more women enrolled. Several aspects of the report have been discussed and are attempting to be implemented as a committee with the following subgroups was created; curriculum, teaching, sexual harassment, student life, and the status and recruitment of women faculty.</text>

She asks that the University reconsider their attitudes and role in institutionalized sexism. She cites that in the past two years that she's been a student she has heard, "sexist jokes, been bombarded by t-shirts with bikini-clad women, and seen the petty and sometimes vicious competitions that go on between women on campus." She also cites an incident in which a male student was shocked that Sandra Day O'Connor was appointed as a Supreme Court Justice. Bond asks that men do not talk down to women, or refer to them as "bitches, babes, or girls."</text>

<text>This 1991 article explains the decision of the SAE National Council to suspend University of Richmond's Sigma Alpha Epsilon Virginia Tau chapter's charter. SAE had their charter "formally suspended after a two-year probationary suspension status" which was the result of behavioral problems, inability to maintain grade requirements, failing to take care of the lodge, and a lack of communication with alumni. Mike Sophir, SAE National Director of Membership at the time stated, "[This decision was made] as a result of disregard for the ritual...and the national laws and the risk management policies, specifically in regard to alcohol and substance abuse." The largest incident took place at an SAE Spring Formal at the Station One Hotel in Virginia Beach. The hotel claimed to have $1,600 in damages after hosting the fraternity. However the current SAE brothers claimed that the damages had not been so severe, and Mark Schlegal, a then junior SAE brother said none of the brothers were ever contacted for "their side of the story." After SAE was suspended, their materials were removed from being sold on campus, and were not viewed as a recognized group by the University.</text>

<text>This 1988 <em>Collegian</em> article discusses the results of a survey done by a journalism class, where they randomly sampled 359 University students with a telephone poll. Of that number of students, 169 were men while 190 were women. Of that 190, 11 percent or 20 women said that it was "mostly true or somewhat true, that they had been forced to have sex." University Police Chief, Robert C. Dillard said that a majority of the rape cases broke out at the beginning of the school year. Of the 20 women who did say that they had been forced to have sex, only one reported the incident to a friend or roomate. The other women did not because they did not think it was "important" and others thought that people would think it was their fault. Warren P. Hopkins, director of the Center for Psychological Services said that if "a woman expressed her disinterest clearly and aggressively then there is no basis for her to feel guilty." Mary Crotty, assistant dean of Westhampton College states, "if at any point she decided it's not what she wants to do and the man proceeds it is rape." The article also goes on to explain a mandatory orientation session in which scenes were acted out, where some would end in a rape based on whether or not the woman was assertive enough in her disinterest.</text>

<text>This short story written in the 1910 yearbook is titled "Mammy Rose" and centers around a young man Marse Roberts who has lost hope at being successful. However an older "colored" woman comes upon him, and they reconnect as she took care of him when he was younger. Although Roberts states that a lot of what he became is due to the help of Mammy Rose, she refuses to take credit and instead tells him how wonderful his mother was. She then says that she will stay with him, clean his house, and gives him money because it was what she promised his mother when he died. This short story plays into the common trope of black servants and enslaved people being grateful to serve. The narrative of Mammy Rose is also written in "negro" dialect, depending on misspells to portray black people as inferior, and exaggerated to express inferiority.</text>

<text>This essay in the 1915 yearbook is written by student Evan Chesterman who is writing about the pride of Richmond ancestry. Chesterman uses metaphors when decribing the abandoned college campus during the Civil War as "a little darkey's kinky head divided off into squares by curl papers." Chesterman also goes onto dicuss the "humilitation of the worst kind," during the war, when Richmond was evacuated due to the approach of Union soldiers. It is described that "a negro regiment was quertered in the college building" and that "these swart occupants of the property proved more obnoxious - and more descrutcuve- than a swarth of cockaroaches in a pantry." The essay ends with explaining the glory of the college, and the strength and honor of the men that have taught and been taught there.</text>

The lack of response shows the sentiments towards the newly formed Lambda Coalition, a group that is a support network for gays and lesbians on campus. Clark says that the lack of response shows that people themselves feel to be unaffected by the issue, and their silence sends a message to gays and lesbians on campus that they are unwelcome. Clark writes that message of the "That's What You Think Section" is homophobic and shows the narrow-mindedness of certain UR students.</text>

The focus was on diversity, and the main goal of the symposium was to "educate people on what leadership is" and "Can leadership be confused with power?" Panelists, who were led by Paul W. Duke, moderator of the television program "Washington Week in Review," also discussed how politics were extremely important to leadership from how voters can be more influential to what takes place in the polls. Alice Hettrick, a Jepson junior, stated that students are interested in the "long-term" issues and wish to find "long-term" solutions to those problems. The curriculum of the leadership program is to look at leadership from a diverse, broad lense to make tomorrow a better future.</text>
