<text>This letter to the editor, published on November 21, 1974, advocated for the passing of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). Since Congress had set March 1979 as the ratification deadline for ERA, 1974 was one of the major years to garner as much support for the amendment as possible. The letter was aimed to clarify two major misconceptions surrounding the ERA and encourage students to support the amendment. The first misconception clarified by the contributor was that the passing of the ERA will not eliminate alimony but will ensure that both parents contribute towards the welfare of the child. Secondly, Joan DeVanzo argued that even though the legislation to protect women against discrimination already existed, it was important for women to be recognized as persons under the law.</text>
