There will be a screening of a film, information tables, a panel discussion and a rally on the Boatwright Lawn. The Campaign for Military Service, a group of LGBTQ+ military veterans will also rally to raise awareness about veterans who are banned from service because of their sexual orientation. The panel discussion will be centered around the question, "What to do when a friend or relative comes out to you?" The film that will be shown is "Torch Song Trilogy" a film about a gay man. In preparation to raise awareness about the events, the Lambda Coalition has hung "pink triangles with the number 350 inside of them all over campus." This number is intended to represent the ten percent of the student body estimated to belong to the LGBTQ+ community.</text>

<text>This 1991 <em>Collegian</em> article discusses the Lambda Coalition, a group on campus created to support LGBTQ+ individuals. It is named the Lambda Coalition as the lambda symbol is a recognized symbol of queer activism by the Gay Activist Alliance in New York City. The main focus of this article was interviewing roommates and close friends of gay, bisexual, and lesbian students on campus to see how they dealt with their friend's sexuality. The first story is of close friends and roommates Caroline and Faye. Caroline told Faye that she was a lesbian, and Faye states that, "You can say all you want about being open minded, but until you put it to the test you really don't know." Faye had various questions running through her mind, wondering why her friend did not tell her sooner, why she was saying this, if Caroline was attracted to her and so on. She even states that she felt as though her "heterosexuality was being tested," and that "homophobia is a lot of fear of finding homophobia in yourself." When Faye talked about it with her mother, her mother's largest concern was if Caroline could 'turn' Faye into a lesbian. The article explains that there is no scientific evidence of a person being 'turned' to homosexuality, and that often it simply makes one question their own sexuality. Faye eventually came to terms with Caroline's sexuality, and she states that they remain close friends. Robert, a roomate and friend of Richard, who is bisexual states that, "It doesn't seem to me that sexual habits should determine how people relate to each other." Robert also says after meeting Richard he became more conscious of using derogatory gay slurs in his conversations. Joseph, a senior, who is a gay man, explained how many heterosexual couples do deviant things behind closed doors, and that people should mind their own business when it comes to the bedroom. The article ends with Faye's experience of being taken to a lesbian bar by Caroline, and realizing that "intimacy is intimacy, no matter who the people are."</text>

The Lambda Coalition, another support group for LGBTQ+ students not only wishes for LGBTQ+ students to join but also allies. Meanwhile Common Ground is only open to those who are queer or questioning. The meeting times are kept secret, off campus, and there is a screening process to get into the club. The mindset behind this is to protect students from the stigmas and stereotypes that are seen on campus. It was also mentioned in the article that Richmond was deemed the most homophobic school in the state of VA, and Common Ground's secrecy is an attempt to keep students in the support group safe.</text>

The students are part of the Lambda Coalition, "a social support group for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and supporters of their rights,&rdquo; a group in the midst of applying for official campus status. The club originated from a pre-screened support group based in Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Largely closeted, the students express frustration with invisibility and erasure, but describe faculty and members of University administration as supportive of their organizational efforts. The group had recently chosen David Braverman, the new assistant dean for Richmond College, as their faculty advisor. Students describe complications of involvement in Greek life, the absence of sexual orientation as a classroom topic, and seeing homophobic graffiti in men&rsquo;s bathrooms. As a counterpoint, a student from VCU describes her social experiences as including a diverse and generally supportive student body.</text>

<text>This article desribes the process through which Anita Bryant, a singer and opponent of civil rights for LGBTQ individuals, was invited to the Robins Center on October 8, 1977. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anita_Bryant#Political_campaigning" target="_blank">Bryant's efforts led to repeals of anti-discriminiation on the basis of sexual orientation ordinances and further discrimination against LGBTQ people across the country.</a> Bryant had been invited to perform at a rally to kick of the ACTION program in Richmond, designed by the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention to "assist local chuches in recruiting more people for Bible study in their Sunday schools." Bryant was asked to attend the rally to perform a "concert of sacred music." Dr. Linwood Horne, associate chaplain at the University of Richmond, assited in the planning. According to Dr. Winford Hendrix of Richmond's First Baptist Church, the contract with Bryant was signed before "Bryan't involvement in the controvery over homosexual rights" and the churches did not feel they could break it. The event was not public, and there would be no press conference, but would involve an autograph signing and the sale of books. Horne specified that Bryant was not being sponsored by the Chaplain's Office, but the location was chosen partially because of the university's Baptist affiliation.
<p>The Richmond Citizens for Gay and Lesbian Rights (RCFLR) planned a protest event for the same day in Monroe Park. RCFLR planned to educate through speakers about the "discrimination that is occuring against gays and lesbians."</p></text>

<text>In a 20-4 vote, the faculty of the E. Claiborne Robins School of Business rejects a motion passed by the Arts and Sciences Faculty recommending that “sexual orientation” be added to the University of Richmond’s anti-discrimination policy. The faculty of Arts and Sciences approved this recommendation on the condition that it attain further approval from the Business School, Law School, Administration, and Trustees before implementation. According to R. Clifton Poole, Dean of the Business School, the motion was born out of a discussion surrounding student discrimination in the ROTC program on campus, and that the motion concealed a “hidden agenda,” one that attempts to remove the ROTC program from campus. Joseph D. Harbaugh, dean of The T.C. Williams School of Law, disapproves of the recommendation, claiming he has “…no evidence that American business uses sexual orientation as an employment standard.” Without this evidence, he believes discrimination based on sexual orientation is not applicable to the policies of the American Association of Law Schools, which the school operates under. A member of the University of Richmond’s Lambda Coalition spoke about this motion, explaining that the organization does not wish for the removal of the ROTC program from campus, but instead pleads for a change in the homophobic policies of the Department of Defense.</text>

<text>This 1991 article by <em>Collegian</em> editor Kevin Kendall recounts the experiences of four LGB students (whose names were changed in the article “due to the sensitive nature of this story”) at the University of Richmond coming out to their parents. It was published the day after the Lambda Coalition for LGB students was approved as an official campus organization. Two of the featured students were lesbian women (“Jennifer” and “Catherine”), one was a bisexual man (“Robert”), and one was a gay man (“Michael”). Kendall establishes that the process of coming out is difficult, but doing so to parents is especially hard because, as “Jennifer” claimed, “No parent pictures their child growing up like this.” The article closes with a discussion of religious disapproval of LGB people and a quote from Assistant Dean of Richmond College and faculty advisor of the Lambda Coalition, David Braverman, who states that people who object to “the issue of homosexuality” should remember “mercy and forgiveness.”</text>

He further goes on to discuss suicidal tendencies in homosexual adults during their 40's and 50's because of a lack of personal and social life. According to Dean Grigg, the minimum time to cure homosexuality is two years but the treatment may go on for years. He said that the University of Richmond has the lowest incidence of homosexuality as compared to other schools such as University of Iowa and University of Texas.</text>
