Of note is Walter Mitchell Carpenter of Petersburg, the first black student to receive a degree from the University of Richmond. Carpenter held a A.B. degree from Lincoln University, and HBCU founded in Pennsylvania in 1854. The PC decided that intellectual stagnation on campus is due to "a homogeneous student body, faculty irresponsibility and an unimaginative curriculum." The editor finds the admissions policy of the university at fault for limiting "intellectual ferment." There are no programs to recruit students. The writers states: "One of the most obvious results of the admissions policy is the fact that racial segregation is still a reality at the University." The writer notes that despite an end to official segregation at the University, there are only two black students at Richmond College, and four black students at Westhampton. Only one black students was admitted for the 1969-1970 academic year, and only one of the six black students lives on campus (mostly likely a reference to Barry Greene R'72). The editorial also notes that there is only one black faculty member at the university, and "only a handful of professors who are not protestant or Baptist." The editorial also states that faculty are not involved enough in creating relationships with students, and do not update their coursework year to year. Assistant director of student activities, Alison Bartel, explains how the implementation of sororities will progress and rush organization. In regards to bringing a black sorority to campus, the article notes that this was a consideration, but that "Harwood said the committee is hoping that exclusivity will not be a problem...The committee was concerned that an all-black sorority would promote segregation when the plan was to enable all students to work together...And when they looked at the number of minority students on campus, they realized they would need all of them to join the sorority for it to be successful." The University of Richmond enrolled its first black residential student, Barry Greene, onto the main campus in 1968. SOBA was created because black students felt that the social life on campus was lacking for them. Members of SOBA were involved in planning Black History Week, community service endeavors, and in the black church community. They also worked with the admissions office to actively recruit more minority students and advocated for more faculty of color as well.
