<text>In this oral history interview, Kevin Jones (‘94) sat down with Cole Richard (’21) and Jisu Song (‘22) on June 18, 2019, in Boatwright Memorial Library. Over the course of the one hour interview, Jones discussed his experience as one of the only black students in the business school, as well as his participation in three student groups: Minority Student Union, Asian American Student Association, and Volunteer Action Council. Jones reflects on his active search for diversity while on campus, including his time living in the International House, a dorm for study abroad and four-year international students.

Beyond the social barriers of race, religion, gender, and geography, Kevin LaMarr Jones professes that dance and music have the ability to unite the world. Since graduating from the University of Richmond with a B.S. in Business Administration and Virginia Commonwealth University with a B.F.A. in Dance and Choreography, Jones has become a graphic designer, dancer, choreographer, and producer based in Richmond, Virginia. His dance portfolio includes work with the Latin Ballet of Virginia as a professional company member, in addition to founding, CLAVES UNIDOS, a community-based dance company and academy which connects Richmond, Virginia to the world and gathers its residents around dances of the African diaspora.

Mr. Jones has been cultivating his own Pan-African dance style since the mid 1990s when as a Senior UR, he was introduced to and became a permanent fan of the music of, salsa band, Bio Ritmo. Jones studied traditional West African dance with Sister Faye Walker and Judy Lynn Edwards. He discovered a passion for flamenco through teachers like with Ana Ines King, Anna Menendez and Antonio Hidalgo Paz as well as many other master flamenco teachers during his travels to New York, Washington DC, Jerez de la Frontera, Madrid and Seville. He has studied Afro-Cuban dances with Ifé Michelle Milligan, Alberto Limonta Perez and various other master teachers in workshops between Miami, New York and Barcelona. He has studied salsa and partner dancing with various artists including Edwin Roa, Steve Greene and Yamil Boo. In 2006 & 2007 he delved into community engagement through the arts with Urban Bush Women as a participant in their Summer Leadership Institute in Brooklyn, NY. In 2015, he performed with his Bomba Afro-Puerto Rican dance teacher, Isha Renta, as an invited guest artist with her group, Semilla Cultural, at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage. He currently serves as a member of the board of directors for Dogtown Dance Theatre where he also creates and presents concert dance performances and productions.

Jones reflects on the social atmosphere at the university, recalls faculty members who she gravitated towards during her time as a student, and shares her lived experience on campus in contrast to the image of diversity the university presented to prospective students at the time.

Iria Jones is from Richmond, Virginia. She grew up in Southside of Richmond in the Oak Grove neighborhood that is adjacent to “Old Manchester.” She attended Armstrong-Kennedy High School where she graduated from in 1983. <text>This article describes the burst of minority students enrolling in the University that year. This effort to recruit some 40 minorities was spearheaded by Dr. Tinina Cade, the Director of Minority Affairs at the University of Richmond. She would go into the cIty of Richmond to find exceptional black students. She also believed that the best way to recruit minorities was to give the existing ones on campus a good experience. That way they will spread the word on how great the campus is for minorities. The article also presents Minority Awareness Weekend that is planned by the Minority Student Union.</text>

<text>As University of Richmond students watched the televised Black Action Movement at the University of Massachusetts, discussions and debates followed regarding instances of racism happening on campus. Sociology professors Henry Stewart and Willie Dell, alongside Westhampton College students, Richmond College students, and members of the Minority Student Union (MSU) all gathered in the Gottwald Science Center auditorium to kickstart a special report titled ‘Racism 101’. This panel created a space in which individuals shared personal opinions and experiences about integration, racism, and racial climates within the academic institution. Many different perspectives on racial issues were brought to light as one student claimed that, “everyone wants to interact,” while another stated that, “not everyone wants to integrate.” This organized program inspired students to challenge the inherent systemic racism found at the University.</text>

He quotes Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in order to admonish minority students for creating separate student groups. Then he claims that men are a minority, and that white Anglo-Saxon men are numerically a minority. He does not reflect on the majority of students groups, particularly Greek organizations, being majority white men.</text>

Mba-Jonas responds by outlining the history of racism and discrimination specifically at the University of Richmond, which he believes to be “…a college for blond hair and blue eyes.” He further points out the systemic racial inequities apparent at the University, from the all-white police force to the majority white dining hall management over a mostly black staff. He describes an encounter with the campus police after a white female student had reported Mba-Jonas just for walking by her dormitory, an experience that Mba-Jonas says is unique to his status as a black man on campus.</text>
