Description An account of the resource In this Collegian article, student Doug Hanks sheds light on the Black student experience on campus from the perspective of Black students. At the time of this article’s publication, there were 88 Black undergraduates, only 3.5% of the student body. Students interviewed for this article share the same opinion that although the University offers academic opportunity, it inhibits Black students from having the same social life as white students. Racism on campus is implicit as opposed to explicit--as it is understood from stories told by Black students Kim Carey and Eric Freeman--that include subtle discrimination at parties, at the dining hall, and even at freshman orientation. Most students and administrators attribute the small amount of Black students and the cost of the University as reasons why Black students are dissuaded from attending the University. However, the article concludes that the Black student experience on campus is not always negative, explaining that students such as Phyllis Hollimon recommend the University to any Black student thinking of applying. Description An account of the resource In this article, University Food Service workers filed a petition to form a union with the National Labor Relations Board according to Debra Creech, the local union organizing director who is representing the employee’s interests. Central Dining Hall employees cite unfair wage schedules, unfair workloads, unfair scheduling and insensitive employers for their decision. Rob Inlow, Director of Food Services, cited that problems with opening the new dining hall could have caused the employees to seek unionization. However, he claims that no union is necessary because the workers already have what a union promises. Workers disagree, explaining that once Inlow and management learned of this push to unionize, several mandatory meetings were called to discourage the employees. All aspects of racism will be reviewed by the commission including the treatment of black employees on campus.
