<text>In this oral history interview, Beth Marschak (W'72) sat down with Jisu Song ('22) and Shira Greer ('22) on June 17, 2019 at University of Richmond Downtown. Over the course of the one hour interview, Marschak talks about growing up in the city of Richmond, being the first in her family to attend college, being a commuter student, majoring in political science, her political involvement on and off campus--including the founding of OWL (Organization for Women's Liberation) and SHAME (Studying and Halting the Assault on Man and Environment) and the anti-Vietnam War movement on campus, a teacher exchange program with Virginia Union University, growing up Southern Baptist, becoming involved in civil rights during high school, her experience as a lesbian both on campus and in Richmond during the 1970s, and what she learned about women's leadership as a student at Westhampton College.<br />
<p>Beth Marschak grew up in Richmond and was actively engaged in the social change movements of the 1960&rsquo;s and 1970&rsquo;s- Civil Rights, the Women&rsquo;s Liberation Movement, the Ecology Movement, the Peace Movement, and Lesbian and Gay Liberation. In her early years, she lived in Lakeside, a white working class neighborhood, then her family moved to the far west end. She came out as a lesbian in the early 1970&rsquo;s, and openly identified as a lesbian in her civil rights and human rights activism.<br /><img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/MarschakBeth_1971-01.jpg" alt="" /><br />By the time she graduated from Westhampton College, University of Richmond, with a BA in political science in 1972, Beth had already helped to start a women&rsquo;s group on campus, and a local chapter of the National Women&rsquo;s Political Caucus. She actively engaged with SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Conference) for many marches and other actions and was an active member of the Woody Guthrie Community Center. She participated in Gay Awareness in Perspective and helped to start Richmond-Lesbian Feminists in 1975. Beth was instrumental in starting a number of coalition efforts including the Virginia Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights (VCLGR) and the Richmond Lesbian and Gay Pride Coalition.</p>
<p>Starting as a representative of the Lesbian Caucus, Beth served on the National Steering Committee of the National Women&rsquo;s Political Caucus for 16 years. Here in Richmond, she served on the Board of the Richmond YWCA for 8 years. In 1978, she was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the International Women&rsquo;s Year Continuing Committee. And, in 1988, as a Jesse Jackson Delegate, she served as the first &ldquo;out&rdquo; Virginia delegate to a national presidential convention.</p>
<br /><img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/MarschakBeth_2019-02.jpg" alt="" /><br />
<p>Beth Marschak&rsquo;s work and advocacy garnered the Richmond Human Rights Coalition Human Rights Award in 1983, and the Richmond YWCA Outstanding Woman of the Year Award in Human Relations in 1990. The Richmond Lesbian and Gay Pride Coalition recognized Beth with awards in 1990, 1993 and 1999. In 2008, Beth co-authored the book Lesbian and Gay Richmond. On November 1, 2008, she conducted the first bus tour featuring the history of the LGBTQ+ community for the Valentine Richmond History Center, where she is a master tour guide. In 2009 Equality Virginia recognized her as one of 20 Outstanding Virginians. Beth has continued as an activist, and participates in Richmond Lesbian-Feminists (which she co-founded in 1975), Southerners on New Ground (SONG), and is on the Board of Diversity Richmond. She recently curated an exhibit at the Diversity Richmond Iridian Gallery: Truthful History Heals, which examined future visions for Monument Avenue, and worked with Ayana Obika as co-chairs of the Diversity Richmond Programs Committee to organize a roundtable community conversation on racism and racial bias in the LGBTQ+ community.</p></text>

Grigg writes this memo after the joint meeting at University Center designed to facilitate a new cooperative program between Randolph Macon, Virginia Union, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the University of Richmond. This proposal was designed to work within <a href="https://www.gao.gov/products/127541" target="_blank">Title III of the Higher Education Act of 1965</a>. The benefits of such cooperation could be significant, particularly through the sharing of certain high tech, and high cost, materials like an IBM computer for example. Grigg asserts that this could be a very good program for the University of Richmond to be a part of, and reminds President Modlin of the October 1st deadline all schools were requested to decide by.</text>

<text>University of Richmond alum Edward Pruden Jr. speaks out against racial insults to the Armstrong-Kennedy High School drill team that performed at the halftime of the UR-VCU basketball game. According to Pruden, UR students yelled racial insults, booed, and sang a rendition of "Dixie." Pruden was an assistant principal at a local high school where he had encouraged black students, athletes and scholars, to consider the University of Richmond. This event was forcing him to reconsider, noting that when he attended UR similar incidents occurred--he recalls "some of my classmates hollering racial insults at Davidson's first black basketball player as he poured in the baskets." Pruden concludes: "I had hoped that one day such redneck behavior would disappear from our campus, and that we could represent ourselves as a liberally-educated community dedicated to, among other things, the brotherhood of man. However, it seems we have not yet shaken off the yoke of racism entirely."</text>

Wicker Jr., a Richmond lawyer and former member of the Virginia Senate from the 36th District, to the Editor in Chief of the Richmond-Times Dispatch on November 25, 1968. Wicker was concerned with the editor's recent article, "Dress on V.C.U." because he believed it was, "a generous and gracious apology for the revolting and disgraceful appearance of many V.C.U. students." Mr. Wicker went on to claim that he understands that since the Dispatch's Editor-In-Chief was at the highest level of administration at V.C.U, that he would be inclined to paint V.C.U. students in a flattering light. However, Wicker took offense to the Editor's claim that many other Virginia college students dressed similarly because, to him, one can easily distinguish between women and men by observing the dress of Richmond College and Westhampton College students.</text>

The article encourages black students to get all that they can out of the University of Richmond, and what they cannot find at UR they can find at Virginia Commonwealth University or Virginia Union University. The article goes on to say that the white students at UR also have trouble in their social life due to lack of events. The editorial says, “One realizes just how little there is on campus for 10 black brothers and three sisters at Westhampton.” Additionally, none of the black students in the article are named. The article goes on to suggest a black mixer as a solution to better the black student experience, and publicize the black student recruitment program.</text>

Their talk show tackles difficult discussions such as homosexuality and sex, while also addressing activities around campus and the Richmond community. There is no structure to the show as Young and Flora go with the flow. Listeners tune in from The University of Richmond campus all the way to the Virginia Commonwealth University. Through vigorous advertising on behalf of Young and Flora, College Talk is a popular radio show which draws-in its listeners through chances to win prizes, in addition to the controversial topics that are discussed. During a comical part of the interview with the two co-hosts, Young and Flora both agreed that they enjoyed the female callers compared to the male callers because, “they offer more varied and individual responses than most of the men.” College Talk is an expanding passion of both Young and Flora.</text>

<text>This is an article found in the September 6, 1993 copy of the <em>Richmond Times-Dispatch</em> Theatre/Dance section. Two pages--one full article--was found on J1 and J6. J1 explores the pros and cons with the development of university theatre departments across the country and specifically in Richmond. Continuing onto J6, this article discusses the thoughts of directors from Richmond area universities (Richard L. Newdick from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), Jack Welsh from the University of Richmond (UR) and William H. Owens from Virginia Union University (VUU) about bringing “outside” actors in to do shows with students and also their thoughts on whether or not students should be allowed to participate in “outside”, non-university shows. While Newdick and Welsh both shared statements about tending to lean towards not bringing in “outside talent” and did so only when they could not cast based on the student pool, Owens liked the idea of bringing in “professionals and semi professionals who can be role models” to students. This article also contains conversation about “marketability” and ticket sales at each institution. Lastly, the revival of the VUU players (Virginia Union University’s “drama program and theatrical producing organization) is mentioned.</text>

The former president, Demetri Kornegay is interviewed in the article, and stressed the lack of funding the club received, and the difficulty to hold club meetings because most of the black students were athletes. The article goes on to discuss that due to the small amount of black students that attended University of Richmond, most of SOBA’s events were done in conjunction with Virginia Commonwealth University and Virginia Union University. Additionally, as a result of the lack of funding, SOBA had to turn to screening movies to celebrate their Black History Week.</text>

<text>This article discusses the imbalanced in black men to black women at the University of Richmond. Black students made up only 1% of the school's population, with only six black women enrolled at the time. This imbalance led to black students to seek relationships outside of the school, going to either Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) or Virginia Union University (VUU) for "social events and female companionship." Black students found it difficult to participate in campus wide events because the events did not cater to their specific interests, but they realized that with such few black students, the majority of University students "would not necessarily [be] pleased]" with events catering to the taste of black students. The VCU Black Student Alliance and the Student Organization for Black Awareness (SOBA) at the University of Richmond partnered to hold a Black Ball. Although the Black Ball was considered a success, black students "wanted] to be included." One black student whose father was an ambassador from Liberia had a unique perspective on the situation and said that "students here at UR seem to have a greater sensitivity to racial problems, which I have never had to think about." The article ends by calling for an increase in the black student population at the University.</text>
