The article called the event a "treat" because not many students had heard an "educated negro" speak before or heard him talk in front of a white audience in the first place. Mr. McGrew was an advocate for social justice because he reminded students of the various sacrifices black people had made for the army. After his address, a black choir sang "old songs, and a large crowd had gathered to listen to the melodies that inadvertently bring back recollections of plantation tales--of long ago." It was a regular practice of the University to invite black choirs to perform for a predominantly white student body. Description An account of the resource In an attempt to foster better social relations, Westhampton College’s freshmen and juniors will attend Richmond College’s dining hall, and Richmond’s sophomores and seniors will attend the Westhampton dining hall on Friday night. After dinner, the students will join together for the Junior-Freshman and Senior-Sophomore basketball games.
