Title
Article "Phi Beta Sigma Colonizes New Fraternity at Richmond"
Subject
Description
This article -- published on September 11, 1980, in The Collegian -- describes the potential addition of University of Richmond's first black fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma. In the article, it mentions Richmond senior, James Reed, who would serve as the fraternity's president. The organization would not be rushing in the fall semester, but rather the spring, as most of its members were on the football team. The article also describes how the fraternity would be different from pre-existing fraternities, including Phi Beta Sigma's stepping tradition. The fraternity's goals include creating a social life for black students on campus, and part of this goal includes diversifying the music played at social events. According to Reed, "Once blacks realize they can come here for academics and a social life on campus, we will be bringing culture to the University; they will come here for academics, not athletics." Further in the article, it is mentioned that there was no space, specifically a lodge, for the fraternity, as the unused ZBT lodge was being used for housing and costs of building a new one would be around $85,000. They were also interested in bringing the sister sorority to the Sigma fraternity, the "Sigma doves" called the Zeta Phi Beta sorority. The article says, "They offer cultural and social functions to the blacks attending UR."
