Article "Students celebrate cultures during Hispanic Heritage Month"

Title
Article "Students celebrate cultures during Hispanic Heritage Month"
Subject
Description
This article published in The Collegian highlights the University of Richmond's Hispanic Heritage Month. The article begins with a joke that student Brian Alas -- of Cuban-Irish descent -- receives due to his Cuban ancestry: Where is your tire? This joke refers to the stereotype that Cuban immigrants come to the U.S. in inner tubes. Both Alas and another student, Jeanette Lopez, were interviewed and discussed multiple topics. Both students agreed that they would rather be referred to by their hyphenated ethnicities (Cuban-American and Mexican-American), rather than "Hispanic." Furthermore, they would rather use the term "Latino" which specifically refers to Spanish speaking people and their descendants in North and South America. Despite this, the author continues to use the term Hispanic. Alas and Lopez describe their unique experiences as Latinos; Alas recounts how he was treated differently by fellow Latinos because of his white appearance while Lopez states that, because of political debates on illegal immigrants, her status has been questioned. In addition, Lopez also notes that she has faced judgement from all cultures for not being able to speak Spanish. The article goes on to compare the population sizes of black people and Latinos, relations between the two ethnic groups, and the desire to see more activities and celebrations of Latin-American heritage.
