The article “SOBA Moves Toward the Mainstream” published on January 31st, 1974 details the importance of Black History Week to help University of Richmond in its effort to be a welcoming environment for both its black and white students. SOBA, the Student Organization for Black Awareness, sponsored the Black History Week. The article mentions that the success of Black History Week is incumbent upon the white students. Additionally it stresses that SOBA was not intended to be a separatist group and instead was working to bring the black and white students together
