Description

This page features the opinion of Westhampton student Emily Gardner on essays not published at Richmond. In the first paragraph, she talks about two notable essays from the May 1915 issue of The Focus. The Focus was a series of essays published in 1915 by Longwood University in Virginia. Gardner summarizes each essay and offers her opinion. Gardner talks about the first essay, "Our Unjust Attitude Toward the Negro," as being offensive to southern white readers. Gardner states that it "would probably not attract us Southerners to it by its title. In fact, one is inclined to feel rather insulted at being accused of being unjust, and especially towards a race of people whom we consider ourselves to know so well."
