Article "Morton Sees Last Season as Learning Experience"

Description

This article describes the sentiments felt by members of the basketball team about the last year of University of Richmond's season in the Southern Conference. The starting center, Mike Morton, explains his "disappointment" with their season and concerns with future recruitment. In particular, Morton mentions that recruiting black "blue-chip" athletes will be especially difficult because of the unattractive social life Richmond offers for black athletes. Morton goes on to say "it takes a special kind of man to come here and stick it out if he is black." The article continues to discuss Richmond's new position as a major independent team alongside Notre Dame and Virginia Tech. In the next season, Richmond will host its first "Spider Basketball Classic" and participate in the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament (TDIT). The TDIT will also feature teams from University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Virginia Commonwealth University.
