Title
Article "Meggyesy Offers 'Rip-Off Strategy'"
Subject
Description
This article describes a speech given by Dave Meggyesy, a former professional football player and author, in the Cannon Memorial Chapel the previous Thursday. Meggyesy offered his opinion on the university’s athletic department, in particular the “dehumanizing aspect of the sport” of football as caused by members of the athletic staff. Meggyesy felt that his time playing football was a theatrical production where athletes lives are constantly controlled by self-appointed positions of authority. He criticizes the way many coaches treat their players, particularly on the football team, and that the control of the athletic department is by “a few individuals funneling all the money in just to get their names on buildings, with the athletes only being used as pawns.” Meggyesy suggests that all University of Richmond students should come together and run the athletic department on their own to avoid this corrupt system.
