This December 2, 1981 letter is from U.S. Council for the International Year of Disabled Persons President Alan A. Reich to University of Richmond President E. Bruce Heilman. The letter describes the commitment of the Council (IYDP) to build cooperation and partnership between disabled and non-disabled citizens. Reich writes to Heilman to encouraging the University to adopt a five-point program: to "establish a trustee or faculty committee" to pursue "long-term concern in the area of disability", to include "disability-related subjects in curricula, seminars and discussion programs", to review "policies relating to accessibility", to review hiring and student processes "to ensure maximum availability of opportunity", and support student work-study with the aim of "bringing disabled persons more fully into the mainstream."
