Letter from E. Bruce Heilman to Joseph A. Califano Jr.
Dublin Core
Title
Letter from E. Bruce Heilman to Joseph A. Califano Jr.
Subject
Description
This is a letter to the Honorable Joseph A. Califano Jr., who was the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) in Washington D.C. from the President of the University of Richmond, E. Bruce Heilman. President Heilman is commending Calfano for his Commencement Address at the College of New Rochelle. Heilman notes that he wants "very much to believe" Califano's address, and "shall accept your words at face value...that you and the Department of Health, Education and Welfare will, in fact, help to preserve diversity in higher education and work to free us from the swell of government red tape and intrusion." While Heilman notes he supports non-discrimination, he complains to Califano about HEW's most recent request for information from the University for statistics about age-based discrimination, noting the University does not have the summer staff to put towards the effort. The University would not be cooperating because of this staffing issue, and notes that because of this "some other institution will be imposed upon."
