Article "Students of Shanghai College Request Americans to Consider Their Problems"

Description

This article is a letter written by students at Shanghai College in China, and was meant for the students and faculty at the University of Richmond. The letter presents some of the problems confronting the Chinese people, particularly the students of the country. The letter asks for the help and advice of American students in thinking through these problems. The letter first presents a summary of what issues were occurring in China at this time, and a request for advice on how to improve Chinese politics. The issues include concerns about having no central government, a battle between the older and younger generations, and concerns with the current financial state of China. The Chinese students ask, "What would American students do if they were in our position?". The letter also states that there should "be a student organization responsible for the communicating of opinions between the students of China and America so that there may be a real understanding between the two nations." Shanghai College was established by the American Baptist Missionary Union and the Southern Baptist Convention, and was merged into East China Normal University in 1952. The letter was read at the university in Chapel by Dr. R.E. Gaines. It is signed by Gung Wei Yuen, Djan Wen Hu, Fang Sien Dji, Sheng Cheng Yu, Dju, Djcn Peng, Wang Gin Cheng, Djang Kwei, Wu Rwen Seng, Wei Yah Han, Ko Ying Kwei, Djou Shui Gen, Wang Gien Hang, and Tsiu Nan Djeh.
