Title
Article "Obscene phone calls: WC women plagued by menacing calls from on- and off-campus"
Subject
Description
This article details a rash of obscene phone calls directed at Westhampton College women as an "annoying and often disturbing fact of life." Robert C. Dillard, director of the University police, noted that 30 incidents of prank calls or harassment had been filed within the school year, all but one reported by women. Dillard suggested that most calls go unreported, thus the 30 reports do not indicate the scope of the problem. Residents of Lora Robins Court are identified as the main victims of prank calls, as their phone system is consecutively numbered. Quita Collins, Westhampton College housing coordinator, reported that in the past some females harassed other females over the telephone. Dillard discovered that some calls were made by University of Richmond students, and other phone calls were "the work of non-students." Heather Tapager, a resident assistant at Lora Robins, describes her frustration with late night phone calls, as they minimize the nature of emergencies. A freshman reported that some phone harassment was sexual in nature, detailing a man who suggested that she view his genitalia. Pamela Orsi was one of the students who received a sexually-oriented call; her harasser would place calls on a timed schedule. Candace Blydenburgh also described the sexual harassment she received during a phone call. The article concludes with suggestions from the campus police on how to deal with the phone calls, and describes call screening options provided by the campus telephone provider, C&P.
