Title
Article "VUU Favors Faculty Shift"
Subject
Description
This article talks about how the President of Virginia Union University (VUU), Thomas H. Henderson, was on board with the idea of having a faculty exchange with the University of Richmond. President of the University of Richmond, George Modlin, had no comment on the possible exchange or a recent federal notification ordering the university to integrate in order to receive further federal funding. Both the universities are Baptist affiliated. VUU, a historically black university (HBCU), had dozens of white students and faculty while UR, a predominantly white and segregated school, had only two black students. VUU was currently carrying out a similar exchange program with the the all-white Methodist Randolph Macon College which only had one or two black students and no black faculty. The government suggested that UR should also send some of its student teachers to practice in black schools in the Richmond Public School system. This talk of desegregation resurfaced the hesistance shown by University official during accepting federal funding. The federal government threatened to pull out the federal funding to the school if UR failed to integrate. UR only recently received its federal funding of one million for dormitory construction after long discussion and consultation with the major Baptist bodies associated with the university.
