A Confederate spider mascot can be seen as decoration outside of the Phi Kappa Alpha lodge. Fraternities oftentimes decorated the lodges for important football games, such as homecoming. "Confederate Spidey" was the university's "unofficial" mascot from around 1950 to the early 1970s.
