Article "Is date rape a problem at UR? Campus survey reveals acquaintance rape statistics"

Description

This 1988 Collegian article discusses the results of a survey done by a journalism class, where they randomly sampled 359 University students with a telephone poll. Of that number of students, 169 were men while 190 were women. Of that 190, 11 percent or 20 women said that it was "mostly true or somewhat true, that they had been forced to have sex." University Police Chief, Robert C. Dillard said that a majority of the rape cases broke out at the beginning of the school year. Of the 20 women who did say that they had been forced to have sex, only one reported the incident to a friend or roomate. The other women did not because they did not think it was "important" and others thought that people would think it was their fault. Warren P. Hopkins, director of the Center for Psychological Services said that if "a woman expressed her disinterest clearly and aggressively then there is no basis for her to feel guilty." Mary Crotty, assistant dean of Westhampton College states, "if at any point she decided it's not what she wants to do and the man proceeds it is rape." The article also goes on to explain a mandatory orientation session in which scenes were acted out, where some would end in a rape based on whether or not the woman was assertive enough in her disinterest.
