Article "Lambda Coalition continues on path to recognition"
Dublin Core
Title
Article "Lambda Coalition continues on path to recognition"
Subject
Description
This 1991 Collegian article focuses on the Richmond College assistant dean and the faculty advisor to the Lambda Coalition, David Braverman, receiving six drunk phone calls making "jokes about the idea of of a support group for gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and supporters of their rights." The support group for LGBTQ+ students was approved as an official campus organization, however people still called asking, "Why do we need a homosexual support group? There's no heterosexual support group." Braverman expressed sympathy with the Lambda Coalition as he stressed that college should be a time for exploration, both personal and academic. The article also links the need for the support group, with the ways LGBTQ+ people are being persecuted in the military, as they discuss how in the Persian Gulf war "homosexuals" are being thrown out of the armed forces after the fighting is over. The article makes a point of stating how psychological research states that such punishment, and exclusion causing gay individuals to hide their identity is damaging to their mental and physical health. There is also some concern about how the ROTC program at the University requests that freshman ROTC students sign a form stating they will not participate or promote homosexual behavior which is damaging if students do discover their sexuality while they are in their college years.
