Article "Modlin: 'No Comment' on HEW Letter"
Subject
Description
This article summarizes a meeting where Dr. George Modlin spoke on institutional change. Dr. Modlin had received a letter from the Civil Rights Director of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW) , and was asked to comment on the contents addressed within the letter. Modlin was told that the university was not diverse enough and was given a list of guidelines to follow to ensure greater diversity and appear less as an "exclusive all-white Southern institution." The school faced the possibility of losing HEW funding if they failed to address the problem. Modlin noted that he would talk about the issue with the board.
