Letters to the Editor "Student, Alumnus Question Policies; Professor Lauds"

Title
Letters to the Editor "Student, Alumnus Question Policies; Professor Lauds"
Subject
Description
In this collection of letters published in The Collegian, two discuss the controversy over the University of Richmond’s decision to place a student, Eva Wong, under probation after she defied policy and brought a black guest to the Westhampton College Song Contest. The first letter was written by Lee Hill, a student who previously signed a letter along with 274 students criticizing the university’s actions against Wong. Responding to L.H. Zincone, Jr.—who wrote a letter to the editor that defended the university’s decision—Hill wrote that the students’ letter was not attacking the university’s punishment of Wong for disobeying policy, but the school’s discriminatory policy against black visitors. In the second letter, alumnus Richard Wright West defended the school’s policy, arguing that “Certainly [the president, deans, and faculty] are better qualified to determine the administrative policies of this University than some two hundred fifty students.” West asserted that the university already allows more student contribution into school affairs than any other in the area, but should not let students believe they are “capable of setting forth…overall policies.” The final letter from E. Sherman Grable congratultes students who participated in the on campus Science Open House.
