Description
This article discusses the "Institute on Inter-American Affairs" program that was held at UR on April 7-8 in 1944. The program began with an address given by President Boatwright followed by a speech from Pauline Turnbull. Turnbull was a faculty member at the Westhampton College, who introduced Dr. Robert C. Smith from the Hispanic Foundation of the Library of Congress. He was speaking on "Ibero-American Arts". Following that Dr. Pedro de Alba from the Pan American Union gave a speech on Spanish-American poetry along with Professor Maximo Iturralde from William and Mary College. The guest speaker was Dr. Curtis Wilgus from the Coordinator’s office and he spoke about "Democracy in Latin America" followed by a discussion led by Dr. Susan Lough. Ione Stuessy Wright spoke next on the "Great Heroes of South America," and introduced Dr. May L. Keller who was the Dean of Westhampton College. On the night of the 7th, Mr. Edwin Taranger spoke on "The Good Neighbor Policy in Inter-American Economic Relations," followed by a reception with Spanish American music and dancing. The next day the program began with Dr. Dabney Lancaster and Margaret T. Rudd. Dr. Marjorie Johnson spoke next about "Modern Methods and Texts on the Teaching of Spanish". The students of Westhampton College followed this topic with a Mexican Dance, the "Jarabe". Mr. Roberto Morales, Instructor of Spanish, introduced Todd Stewart from the Division of Inter-American Educational Relations, who gave an address on "Brazil". The final speaker after a lunch break was Dr. Parker Trask from the United States Geological Survey and he discusses "Practicum, Mexico’s New Volcano."
