Title
Advertisements [Illustration]
The Spider 1914
Description
This page is the introduction page to the advertisements section of the 1914 yearbook. The page features an illustration of an African-American man wearing a tattered suit pulling a donkey with the sign “advertisements” hung on it. The illustration portrays the African-American man in a lower class position because he is pulling a donkey behind him. During this time, the yearbook would never include an illustration of a white man pulling a donkey because it would contrast with time period’s stereotypical racial roles in society.
